10 Clear Signs Someone Has Seriously Low Emotional Intelligence — Lifestyle
In this article

1. They Dismiss Others’ Feelings as Overreactions

People with low emotional intelligence often think everyone is exaggerating when expressing their feelings. They don’t get why someone might be upset over a forgotten birthday or hurt by an “innocent comment.” To them, these emotions seem blown out of proportion because they can’t truly empathize with what the other person is experiencing.

2. They Avoid Commitment and Never Plan Ahead

Lacking emotional intelligence often shows up as dodging responsibility and commitment. If someone can’t make long-term plans and frequently says things like “we’ll see” or “this is too much pressure right now,” it’s a sign they’re afraid of obligations. They struggle with expectations and instantly feel burdened when others rely on them.

3. They Can’t Offer a Genuine Apology

One of the biggest giveaways of low EQ is when someone won’t take responsibility for their actions. The classic “I’m sorry if you feel that way” is common among those lacking emotional intelligence because it shifts blame onto the other person. A real apology means owning your mistake — something low EQ folks rarely do.

4. They Don’t Care What Others Feel

If someone regularly ignores or belittles others’ feelings, or says things like “you’re overthinking it,” it’s a clear sign they lack empathy — a key part of emotional intelligence. Recognizing and understanding others’ emotions is essential, but those without it often feel uncomfortable facing feelings head-on.

5. They Always Blame Others

People with low emotional intelligence often think others are too sensitive or have unrealistic expectations, causing conflicts that they don’t see as their fault. When someone tells them “you hurt me,” they interpret it as “it’s all my fault.” This instantly puts them on the defensive — and as we know, the best defense is a good offense.

6. They Say Whatever Comes to Mind

Self-control and thoughtful communication are key signs of emotional intelligence. But those with low EQ often blurt out whatever they’re thinking without considering how it affects others.

They call this “honesty” and proudly wear it as a badge. But hiding behind honesty is just an excuse to say anything at any time — even if it’s hurtful or thoughtless.

7. They Don’t Know How to Be Supportive

When someone comes to them with problems, they often respond poorly. For example, if a friend is going through a painful breakup, they might say, “At least you don’t have to pay for a wedding.” This kind of insensitivity comes from not being able to put themselves in someone else’s shoes or recognize when support, empathy, or just listening is needed.

8. They Send Passive-Aggressive Signals

People with low emotional intelligence often avoid direct confrontation and instead give feedback with passive-aggressive vibes. For instance, if they have a disagreement, they might delete someone’s number and ignore them forever rather than talk it out and resolve the issue. They use exclusion and withdrawal to dodge uncomfortable emotional situations.

9. They Don’t Get Why Their Jokes Hurt

They often hide behind “it was just a joke” when someone is hurt by their words. People with low EQ don’t realize humor and sarcasm can mask attacks, and these “jokes” can genuinely hurt others. For them, fun often means making remarks at someone else’s expense.

10. They Struggle to Maintain Long-Term Relationships

Emotional intelligence plays a big role in keeping relationships strong over time. Without it, people often can’t maintain friendships, romantic partnerships, or work connections. When someone can’t understand others’ feelings and needs, conflicts are inevitable — and these usually end the relationship.
