In a perfect world, we’d all have huge homes with towering Christmas trees and ornate fireplaces hung with stockings—or at least a charming candleholder on the dresser. But what if your apartment isn’t as big as your holiday enthusiasm? Maybe that giant inflatable snowman won’t fit in your "nonexistent garden," but there are plenty of ways to bring a warm, festive vibe inside. Interior designers are here to show you how to stylishly decorate even your smaller space.
Pick a Mini Tree Instead of a Giant One
If you live in a studio, a Rockefeller Center–sized tree probably won’t fit, but interior designer Brittny Button says smaller trees (under 120 cm) can be just as stunning. “A narrower tree takes up much less space,” she explains. If you have a little extra room, try grouping several smaller trees. “I love arranging three mini trees of different heights—it adds depth and visual interest. Think of the Grinch-style trees: taller but slimmer, perfect for small spaces.”
Wreaths and Garlands Everywhere
Wreaths and garlands add tons of charm without taking up space. Button suggests, “A garland can brighten up your fireplace, door frame, mirror, or console table. Add fairy lights, berries, or ribbons for a magical touch.” Designer Scott Francis recommends placing wreaths on both sides of your door so the festive spirit greets you inside and out. You can even hang one above your mirror with a thin fishing line for a subtle effect.
Avoid Overdecorating
A Santa-themed pillow is cute but can quickly overwhelm a small space. Francis suggests opting for understated yet elegant touches: “Use jewel-toned hand towels in the bathroom, plaid pillow covers, Christmas-themed books on the coffee table, or decorations in glass and silver bowls.” No need to buy new pillows—just swap the covers to save space after the season.
Swap Your Artwork for Festive Pieces
Designer Peggy Haddad says, “Christmas-themed art looks great in unexpected places like the bathroom or kitchen.” You don’t have to spend much—vintage-style holiday art is super trendy right now, so check out thrift stores or flea markets. If you have a smart TV, swap your digital photos for seasonal scenes like a classic Christmas moment, a crackling fireplace, or a black-and-white snowy landscape.
Play with Lights and Candles
Candles may be small, but they create a huge mood. Whether pine-scented or a simple tealight in a silver holder, they bring a special blend of nostalgia, elegance, and festive warmth to any room.
Stockings on the Windowsill
No fireplace? No problem. The windowsill is a perfect spot for Christmas decor. Create a mini woodland scene that brings warmth to your home even on the coldest days.
Let Less Be More
You don’t need to decorate every inch to make your home feel festive. Haddad says the secret is thoughtful selection.
“In small spaces, it’s about making an impact without overdoing it. It’s smart to put away some everyday decor so your Christmas decorations can shine. Even a small tabletop tree can be stunning when paired with soft, layered lights.”
