Classic literary stories are enjoying a revival in film and TV these days. Now, one of 19th-century romantic literature’s most iconic works, Jane Eyre, is set for a new screen adaptation: a TV series based on Charlotte Brontë’s world-famous novel is in the works.

The lead role will be played by Aimee Lou Wood, known from series like Sex Education and The White Lotus. Though still in early stages, the project is already generating serious buzz.

An Everlasting Tale of Love and Independence

The novel Jane Eyre, published in 1847, remains a cornerstone of world romantic literature. Set in 19th-century England, it follows the life of an orphaned girl, Jane, from a tough childhood to adulthood.

Jane grows up in hardship before becoming a governess at the mysterious Thornfield Hall, home to Edward Rochester. A deep emotional bond develops between them, but secrets from the past and Mr. Rochester’s dark family history turn everything upside down.

When Jane discovers that Rochester has hidden the truth about his mentally ill wife, Bertha, and still tries to marry her, she chooses to leave Thornfield to stay true to her own moral values.

What makes the novel special is that alongside the romance, it strongly explores female independence, moral integrity, and self-identity—themes that still resonate today.

Aimee Lou Wood’s Exciting New Role

Aimee Lou Wood will take on the role of Jane Eyre in this upcoming series. She has quickly become one of Britain’s most captivating young actresses.

After her witty and sensitive character in Sex Education, and a memorable performance in the latest season of The White Lotus, she now steps into the shoes of one of literature’s most beloved heroines.

Details about who will play Mr. Rochester and other cast members are expected to be announced in the coming months.

The Brontë Sisters Back in the Spotlight

Interestingly, news of the Jane Eyre series came shortly after the release of a modern film adaptation of Wuthering Heights. Written by Charlotte’s sister Emily Brontë, that story is known as one of the most stormy love stories in literature.

The new adaptation is directed by Emerald Fennell and stars two global stars: Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. It brings a fresh visual style and new interpretation to the classic tale, showing how the Brontë sisters’ works still inspire filmmakers.

This Won’t Be the First Jane Eyre Adaptation

The story of Jane Eyre has been brought to screen many times. The most famous adaptations include the 2006 BBC miniseries starring Ruth Wilson as Jane. This four-part series is celebrated as one of the most faithful to the novel.

Among films, Franco Zeffirelli’s 1996 version featuring Charlotte Gainsbourg as Jane stands out, as does the 2011 adaptation directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, starring Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender.

Each adaptation has offered a unique take on Jane’s story—from romantic drama to gothic interpretations.

Why Jane Eyre’s Story Still Matters Today

Though nearly two centuries old, Jane Eyre’s character remains inspiring. She represents a woman who stands firm in her values despite societal pressures and refuses to sacrifice her independence for love.

That’s likely why filmmakers and series creators keep returning to her story—and why many are eagerly awaiting to see Jane come to life through Aimee Lou Wood’s performance.
