Feeling secure is key

If you want your relationship to thrive long-term, ask yourself this: do you and your partner both feel safe and secure with each other? Or is one of you often wondering if being together is really the right choice? It’s totally normal to have these thoughts in the early months, but over time, a true sense of security needs to develop. You’ll only be genuinely happy together when you truly believe you’re in the right place—by each other’s side.

Without clear words and actions, it’s tough to know where your relationship is headed—even if you generally enjoy being with each other.

For example, if you’ve been dating for several months but haven’t talked about whether you’re officially a couple, it’s worth having that conversation. If you both want something serious, there’s no problem. But if only one of you is thinking long-term, it’s better to find out now—before feelings get too deep.

What the expert says

Relationship therapist Jeff Guenther points out a strong sign that a relationship is headed for trouble: when one partner consistently puts in more effort than the other. This imbalance can slowly destroy harmony and stability over time.

Feelings of anger and disappointment will grow in the partner who invests more, eventually making it almost impossible to avoid a breakup.

What’s especially sad is that the partner who invests less often doesn’t realize what’s coming when the other wants to end things.

What can help?

If you’re the one feeling overlooked and like you’re putting in way more effort, talk openly with your partner. Sometimes, outside issues can cause someone to be distracted or distant, and they might not realize how it’s affecting your connection. They may not take action until the root problem is addressed.

Or maybe they haven’t taken you seriously enough yet—but once they understand how you feel, they’ll think about where your relationship should go and whether you share a future.

This works both ways. So if your partner is attentive, interested, and clearly enjoys being with you, take a moment to reflect on your relationship. If you love them and want to stay together, but haven’t put much effort in yet, try being more present and talk about it. If you’re not equally important to each other, it’s often best to go your separate ways.
