How Many Partners We’ve Slept With by Age 50 — Relationship
In this article

Not so long ago, about 70-100 years back, this wasn’t really a question — nor was who we’d spend our lives with. Marriages were typically arranged by parents or grandparents, often more for practical reasons than love. Later, young people gained more freedom and, at least in modern families and some regions, had a say in who they’d share their lives with. We know that even today, free choice isn’t universal everywhere, but social trends are shifting toward more tolerance and openness.

So, is it the strict rules of the past or today’s more open mindset that shapes how many relationships we have? It’s a tough question to answer, but statistics do reveal the average number of sexual partners people have over their lifetime — at least on average.

Between ages 25 and 49

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, heterosexual adults in their young to mid-adulthood have slept with an average of 4-6 sexual partners. Specifically, men reported 6.3 partners and women 4.3 partners between 2015 and 2019. At this stage, people are carving out their independence and personal lives, which naturally influences their relationship choices and sexual experiences (including the number of partners).

Big Differences Between Women and Men in This Age Group

The data also shows significant differences between women and men aged 25-49 in various partner categories. Only 12.9% of women reported having 15 or more partners, compared to 28.3% of men. Meanwhile, 17.7% of women and 11.2% of men said they had just one partner.

The greatest harmony was found in the 5-9 and 10-14 partner groups: 28.6% of women and 25.8% of men fell into the first group, while 11.6% of women and 12.5% of men belonged to the latter.

These numbers highlight that while many factors influence the number of sexual experiences and relationships, social norms and personal choices play an increasingly important role in how many partners we meet throughout life.

More Than Age Shapes Our Choices

We also know that it’s not just age but religion and birthplace that significantly influence the number of sexual partners people have. Recent studies show that globally, adults have an average of 9 sexual partners in their lifetime.

According to World Population Review, Turkey tops the list with 14.5 partners, followed by Australia with 13.3 and New Zealand with 13.2, while Switzerland ranks lowest at 11.1 partners.

In India, where strict marriage rules prevail, the average person has just 3 sexual partners in their lifetime. Similar numbers appear in Hong Kong, Vietnam, and China, where the average is also below 4. In Hungary, the average is 6.6, placing us somewhere in the middle range.

As social norms shift and freedom grows, people have more control over their relationship choices than ever before. Yet, it’s clear that religion, culture, social setup, and where we live still strongly shape how many partners we have. These social rules and personal or family values play a defining role in our sexual lives, with age adding nuance rather than steering the course.
