There are awkward moments, and then there are those painfully embarrassing situations, like these ten stories below.
The Burning Question
As an introvert, I’m not great at small talk and get nervous meeting new people. When I first went to my new hairdresser, she tried to chat kindly, and I was so anxious that out of embarrassment, I asked her what she does for a living—while she was cutting my hair.
The Owner
I worked for years at a veterinary clinic, then retrained and started at a hospital caring for people. My first patient was a little boy, and while waiting, I looked for his parents by asking the people sitting there, “Which one of you is the owner?”
The Papers
After a tiring night shift, I was heading home at dawn when a cop stopped me. He looked over my twenty-year-old clunker and jokingly asked if the papers were clean. I was so tired that I pulled out the registration, wiped it a few times on my pants, and handed it over. The officer burst out laughing and said no one had ever made him laugh during a traffic stop like that—even though I wasn’t trying to be funny.
Helping Out
A coworker quietly asked me for a Tampax in the office. I whispered back that I only had O.B. pro-comfort tampons, then discreetly slipped one into her hand. She stared silently at the tampon, and we just looked at each other for minutes until it turned out she actually wanted tape, not a tampon.
The Compliment
On my first day as a waitress, an elderly guest complimented me on how pretty I was, and I nervously replied, “You’re welcome,” before walking away.

The Sound of Desperation
As a food delivery driver, I had a really tough day and couldn’t find the last address. I circled the apartment complex for 15 minutes, constantly trying to call the customer. Eventually, they came down to find me, but by then I’d accidentally left a five-minute voicemail of me sobbing in desperation.
Valentine’s Day
At the restaurant checkout, a young man asked, “Could you squeeze us in on Valentine’s Day?” I said I was working, only to find out he meant if we had any free tables that day. I ended up serving him and his girlfriend! I wanted to disappear.
The Picture
At the doctor’s office, they asked for my referral, which I hadn’t printed but showed on my phone—the email my GP sent. The receptionist kept glancing between my phone and me with a raised eyebrow, and I couldn’t figure out why. Turns out, I’d been showing her a photo of one of my cats instead of the referral.
Philosophy
As a teenager, my first job was as one of Santa’s little helpers at a shopping mall. I wanted to ask a kid, “Hi, how are you? What’s your name?” but what came out was “Hi, what are you?” Both the kid and the mom looked at me totally confused.
The Bird
I was a hostess at a restaurant and wanted to ask a guest if they liked the duck, but the words escaped me, so I asked, “Is the quack-quack tasty?”
Oops…
I arrived at work in an unusually good mood, but when I entered the quiet office, all I saw were my coworkers’ gloomy faces. Trying to lighten the mood, I jokingly asked, “Who died?” Only to be told one of my supervisors had passed away.
