If you can't relax on your day off, this is why your brain won't switch off — Lifestyle

The vacation had finally arrived. The sun was out, the sea was right there, and all I wanted was to relax. Instead, my mind kept spinning through the same restless loop.

Sleep had become a luxury. I'd read the first three pages of my beach book on repeat, while my brain replayed the endless to-do list waiting for me back home. Sound familiar?

Just a week earlier I was still at my desk, tasks piling up one after another. Once I finally closed everything out, the break I'd earned was right in front of me. So why was it so hard to actually feel free? Walking down a quiet street in Dubrovnik one afternoon, it hit me: something wasn't right.

My brain simply couldn't accept that this time was now only about me, and not about my obligations back home.

The first few days were the hardest to switch off

As the waves lapped at the pebbled shore, my heart was racing at the same restless pace, as if I were missing out on something important. The beauty of the city couldn't quite overpower the tension inside me.

It took a few days before I could resist the constant pull to stay digitally connected, and finally trust that no catastrophe would strike just because I let myself rest. If you struggle with this too, learning to set work aside without guilt during a holiday can change everything.

At first, the anxiety felt like drowning underwater. I felt like I had to keep my phone in my hand at all times, as though an urgent email might land at any second. Even the simple idea of doing nothing made me uncomfortable. But as I slowly learned to release the tension, I realized this time was supposed to be about recharging.

The evening everything finally shifted

One night, watching the sunset from a café terrace, I finally let go. I understood that these days truly belonged to me: to recovery, to quiet moments and real rest. The moment I decided to put my worries aside, the whole trip began to take on a different shape.

Maybe the switch from work to rest will never be perfectly smooth. And yet, in that moment, when the soft sounds of the road, the salty scent of the sea and the promise of a new adventure took over my mind, I realized something: real freedom can exist without compromise.

What is vacation anxiety?

It's that restless feeling of being unable to relax on your time off, when your mind keeps circling back to work and to-do lists instead of letting you enjoy the break you've earned.

Why is it so hard to switch off on holiday?

After weeks of nonstop tasks, the brain struggles to accept that this time is only about you. The constant pull to stay digitally connected keeps the tension alive until you consciously let it go.

How can I finally start to relax?

It often takes a few days. Resisting the urge to check your phone and trusting that nothing will fall apart while you rest are the first steps. For me, the shift came the moment I deliberately set my worries aside.
