My Top Career Lessons I Wish I Knew 10 Years Ago — Lifestyle
In this article

Ever since I was a child, I dreamed of becoming a journalist. I didn’t just flip through colorful magazines—I cut out pictures and glued them together to create my own little newspaper.

Those colorful pages were my first steps toward that dream, a place where my imagination and creativity met reality. Back then, I didn’t realize the path ahead would be rocky, uncertain, and full of challenges. But now, with a decade of experience, I can confidently say: I wouldn’t choose any other path. Still, there are a few things I’d definitely advise my younger self.

Don’t Always Choose the “Safe” Option

We often hear advice like, “Pick a stable career that guarantees a steady income.” I heard that a lot ten years ago. Many thought I should have become a literature teacher (and honestly, there were good reasons for that), and sometimes I doubted whether sticking with journalism was the right choice.

But time taught me this: if from the start you feel a career isn’t for you (like I did with teaching), it’s probably for a reason. The illusion of security can never replace true happiness. It’s worth bravely following your own path, even if those around you don’t always understand.

Being Afraid Doesn’t Stop You From Moving Forward

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is this: courage doesn’t mean you never feel fear—it means you keep going despite it.

If you’re unhappy at a job for a long time, don’t be afraid to make a change! Life’s too short to spend your days stressed out or stuck in a toxic environment.

Even if finding a new job feels tough, it’s better to dive into the search sooner rather than endure something that drains you.

If you’re treated unfairly, stay kind—but have the courage to walk away and say goodbye to those who don’t deserve your time and energy.

Independence Is Tough, But It Might Be Your Key to Happiness

Being self-employed isn’t easy. It’s unpredictable, chaotic, and sometimes it feels like everything falls apart at once. But if you’re doing what you love, it’s worth every challenge.

Each day brings new chances to learn, grow, and shape your own path. Flexibility and independence teach you that failures aren’t the end—they’re opportunities to gain experience.

Put Your Health First, Always

If I could give one piece of advice to my younger self or anyone else, it would be this: your physical and mental health must always come first!

Don’t sacrifice your peace, happiness, or important relationships for a job or a position you want to reach—especially not your well-being.

Working in a positive environment with supportive people isn’t a luxury—it’s a basic need. That’s how you build a sustainable and joyful career.

Perseverance and Belief Are Priceless

After ten years, I can say: perseverance and believing in yourself are worth their weight in gold. There will be setbacks and tough moments when everything feels impossible.

But if you trust your dreams and are willing to work for them, success will almost certainly come—maybe not always in the way you imagined.

The experiences you gain, the small wins, and the confidence you build are priceless treasures.

Learn from the Past, But Don’t Get Stuck in It

If things didn’t go as planned, don’t dwell on it too long!

Every failure is a chance to learn, every wrong choice opens a door to a new direction. You can’t change the past, but you can shape your future.

Be brave, take risks, and never let fear or comfort zone define your life!
