1. Stage – Noticing Differences
Before you panic: noticing differences doesn’t automatically mean the relationship is doomed. Many people use this stage to reflect on their own needs and goals, which can actually help improve the relationship. But if issues stay unresolved, things will likely worsen over time.
2. Stage – Limited Communication
This stage can be tough because partners drift apart emotionally as well as physically. They may feel stuck, sensing the relationship lacks strong or genuine connection.
3. Stage – Stagnation
Stagnation can last a long time because partners fear change or feel too tired and unmotivated to seek a new direction. (This is often when someone falls for someone else or steps outside the relationship, shaking things up.)
4. Stage – Avoidance
At this point, the relationship is practically over, though it hasn’t been officially ended. The emotional connection is gone, and both partners sense that separation is just a matter of time.
5. Stage – Breakup
Breakups are never easy, but recognizing these stages can help you understand the process and maybe even prevent the breakup—if the relationship truly matters. The key lies in open communication and spotting early warning signs. When you act in time, many relationships can still be saved or improved, according to experts.
