The history of infidelity indeed goes back a long way and embodies one of the most complex and sensitive aspects of human relationships. It may be surprising for many to realize that cheating can occur even in relationships that outsiders, and even the people involved, consider happy and fulfilling.

A happy marriage is often just an illusion

Many live under the misconception that the sacred institution of marriage provides an unconditional guarantee of fidelity. The truth, however, is much more complicated. The illusion of a happy marriage often nurtures internal expectations that are not always easy to maintain even in the most harmonious relationships.

Marriage is continuous work, a series of ongoing mutual compromises, and sometimes these compromises do not compensate for individual, personal needs, the fulfillment of which does not always fit within the framework of the relationship.

The underlying psychological factors

Behind infidelity often lie deeply rooted psychological factors that point to a lack of constructive communication between spouses. It may happen that one partner struggles with internal insecurity, self-esteem issues, and infidelity stems from an unconscious desire to satisfy these. In such cases, cheating not only means breaking loyalty to the partner but also represents a response to the individual's own self-esteem questions.

The power of flattery and the charm of novelty

It is not uncommon that the driving force behind infidelity is a flirtation outside the partnership, which generates a kind of emotional excitement. The secrecy involved in cheating, the possibility of new discoveries, attention from the opposite sex, praise that many people do not receive in their daily lives, can be strongly tempting.

Monogamy and changing times

The concept of monogamy is gradually transforming in the modern world, due to sociocultural changes. Today's societal expectations often set irrationally high standards for relationships, which do not always fit into the concept of individual happiness. Infidelity sometimes arises from the tension within the traditional framework of monogamy, because for some people, commitment does not equate to happiness, thus temptation may prompt action.

Even the best can face infidelity

Unfortunately, it is not a guarantee against infidelity if someone is truly emotionally connected and firmly committed to their partner. There are often reports of cases where, despite being in an honest, respectful, and understanding marriage, a third party touches the person in a way that satisfies previously suppressed deficiencies, whether physical or emotional.

Ideally, the person can put a stop to themselves and is able to dig to the root of their marriage problems – because if they do not reveal this and move on, they may encounter the same challenges in their next relationship.

To prevent infidelity, open and honest communication between the parties is essential, continuous nurturing of mutual attention, as well as accepting that every relationship faces unique challenges, for which flexibility and empathetic understanding are fundamentally important.
