Everyday life gives us plenty of chances to surprise our loved ones with gifts. But some items can bring bad luck to both giver and receiver—one of the most famous is the chopstick.
Hat
A stylish hat or cap might seem like a great gift idea, but in many cultures, it’s actually considered a bad omen. In China, for example, a green hat carries a very offensive meaning: it implies that a man’s partner is unfaithful. That’s why gifting a hat can cause awkward misunderstandings and even bring bad luck to a relationship.
Tradition says never to give a man a hat if you wish him well—opt instead for a scarf, gloves, or another accessory.

Mirror
Mirrors have always been mysterious objects. Beyond reflecting our image, many believed they connect to the soul or even the afterlife. Because of this, gifting a mirror is considered unlucky in many places.
In the West, the most common belief is that breaking a mirror brings seven years of bad luck.
Other cultures think mirrors can "steal" a person’s soul or energy. So no matter how beautiful it looks at home, it’s best to avoid giving mirrors as gifts.
Knife
Knives are handy tools for daily life but not the best choice for gifts. Superstitions say knives symbolize cutting ties—whether friendship or love. Giving a knife might unintentionally suggest ending the bond. However, there’s a clever fix: if the recipient gives a small coin in return, the knife counts as a purchase, not a gift, avoiding bad vibes.
Watch

A watch marks the passage of time, symbolizing life’s finiteness. That’s why it’s considered an unlucky gift in many cultures. In China, gifting a watch is a strong bad omen because the phrase sounds similar to words related to funerals.
It’s believed that giving a watch as a gift can signal the end of a relationship or life itself.
Though many see watches as practical and elegant gifts, it’s wise to steer clear if you want to avoid superstitions.
Pearl
Pearls are elegant and beautiful jewelry, yet many folk traditions say they carry tears. It’s said that receiving pearls as a gift brings sorrow, conflict, or sadness.
Because of this, in some places pearls are only gifted if the receiver gives something in return—like money—to neutralize the bad meaning. While pearls are classic gifts, it’s good to know many believe they bring pain more than joy.
