These days, lots of people excitedly choose trendy decor elements that quickly turn home routines into a nightmare. Don’t make these mistakes!
First off, I’m totally anti "cleaning for cleaning’s sake." I believe cleaning should work for me, not the other way around. Luckily, no guest would ever guess that. It’s not that I don’t love order and cleanliness — it’s just super important to me to spend as little time as possible scrubbing floors, dusting, and tackling limescale.
Our daily routine usually means tidying up and wiping down kitchen counters and tables. I only break out the mop if something spills. Bonus: in recent years, we got a robot vacuum with a mopping function — my little helper has taken a huge load off my shoulders.
So, I say regular upkeep matters, but let’s be smart from the start. When planning your space, choose basics that save you time cleaning. Here’s what to steer clear of! These might look elegant and inviting in catalogs, but in real life, every speck of dust, water drop, and fingerprint shows up at the worst moments.
Too-Dark Furniture and Tiles
At first glance, black furniture, graphite gray tiles, or matte black faucets feel super luxe. But after a few days, the catch is clear: every drop and dust particle shows up instantly. Black faucets, for example, look sleek but water spray and soap buildup appear so fast they always look messy without constant wiping. The same goes for dark floors: even if you vacuum nonstop, you’ll basically start over the same day.
Glossy and Glass Surfaces
High-gloss kitchen fronts or polished marble are truly eye-catching — until fingerprints or glass rings appear. Same with glass tables: a favorite in decor magazines, but in real life, they’re constantly spotted with smudges, crumbs, fingerprints, and of course, dust. After placing a glass of water, you’ll need to wipe it again right away. So only pick these if you don’t mind running around with a cloth all the time.
Matte Isn’t Always Better
People often think matte kitchen fronts are less sensitive, but greasy fingerprints show up quickly and can be even harder to clean than glossy ones. And speaking of tiles: embossed tiles or mosaics look magical, but cleaning grout and tiny gaps is such a tedious job that keeping them spotless long-term is nearly impossible.
Too-Light Flooring
Whitewashed oak, light, or beige tiles definitely open up a space but also highlight every tiny speck. In a small bathroom, light flooring seems like an obvious choice, but if you have dark hair, you’ll be vacuuming daily. Light surfaces also show water spots, so the whole look can quickly feel sloppy. A better choice is patterned or mid-tone flooring — they hide dirt while keeping the space feeling open.
Open Shelving
Open shelves might seem practical and stylish at first (especially if partly built-in), but chances are you’ll be dusting mugs and decor weekly. And if they don’t reach the ceiling, dust and grease quickly build up on top of cabinets — even harder to clean than usual.
The secret? Go for mid-tone, patterned, and lightly textured surfaces — they’re not only beautiful but cleverly hide everyday dirt and mess. Your home will always look neat, even after a long day when you just quickly wipe the kitchen counter and choose to relax instead of deep cleaning. And what about glossy surfaces, black accents, and exciting textures? Use them as easy-to-clean accessories like small rugs, pillow covers, vases, or plant pots!
