Can Dogs Sense When Someone in the Family Is Pregnant? — Family

I found my spoiled little drama queen’s reaction pretty funny, especially since she completely ignored my daughter for the first four months after she was born — but over time, they became best friends.

Since then, I’ve shared this story with many people, and almost everyone has a tale about how their pets reacted when a new family member arrived.

During a recent chat, I got curious: is it just us owners reading into our furry friends’ behavior, or do animals really know when a baby is on the way?

I decided to dig deeper, and it turns out there’s quite a bit of research showing that dogs, for example, almost certainly sense when a new family member is coming.

Scent: The First Clue

Dogs have incredible senses—they can distinguish ten thousand or more different scents, while humans can only detect about a hundred. During pregnancy, hormonal changes alter a person’s unique scent profile—rising levels of beta-HCG, estrogen, and progesterone create new scent patterns. So it’s safe to say dogs often "catch on" to pregnancy before even the mom-to-be does.

Behavior and Routine Changes

Besides hormonal shifts, a pregnant person’s behavior, movement, and habits change too. Slower walks, more frequent breaks, gentler steps—all clear signals that a watchful dog can easily pick up on.

Experts say dogs respond sensitively to their owner’s slower pace and often become even more devoted and caring.

Emotional Mood and Attention

Dogs create a real emotional map of their owners—they quickly notice if we’re sad, tired, or stressed. Pregnancy feelings like fatigue, nausea, or mood swings can strongly influence a dog’s behavior.

That’s why many people report their dogs getting even closer to the expectant mom, sometimes becoming protective companions.

Some dogs immediately sense the change and become more cautious and protective around the pregnant family member, while others first notice hormonal shifts and adapt more gradually. A 2025 study found that 65-70% of dog owners observed behavior changes when a family member was expecting.

How to Prepare Your Dog for the Change

The arrival of a baby changes the whole family’s life, and dogs are no exception. Luckily, there are simple ways to start preparing your furry friend early on for the newest, tiniest "pack member."

Try showing your dog the baby clothes and letting them sniff them so these new scents become familiar. If only one of you has been walking the dog so far, start sharing that task now to ease the transition.

Remember, a lot changes for your dog too. Even if they pick up on the pregnancy, they don’t understand everything like we do, so this new situation can be stressful. Be patient and gentle to help them navigate this transition smoothly.
