Every year there's a moment when you reach for your sandals, slip them on, glance down — and realize your feet weren't quite ready for the spotlight. The polish might look fine. But the heels? That's a completely different story.

Cracked heels are one of the most common foot problems, and it's no accident they show up right when summer arrives. All winter long they hide inside boots and thick socks. Come spring, they take their revenge. The good news: with the right routine, cracked heels are both treatable and preventable.

Why do heels crack in the first place?

Skin cracks when it dries out, thickens, and loses its flexibility. Under pressure — like every step you take — that stiff skin literally splits open.

And this isn't just a cosmetic issue. Deep cracks can hurt, and they can even open the door to infection.

A lot of people assume dry skin is strictly a winter thing. For your feet, it's the opposite. In summer, when you're wearing open sandals, the extra airflow paradoxically dries the skin out. And walking barefoot on the beach both exfoliates and dries at the same time — leaving your soles smoother, but also more vulnerable.

How to prevent cracked heels

  • Moisturize consistently. Most people think of this last, when it's actually the single most important step. Foot cream morning and night, exactly the way you care for the skin on your face. Look for a cream with urea — it's one of the most effective ingredients for feet, because it absorbs quickly and works deep down.
  • Exfoliate, but gently. Once or twice a week, use a foot file or pumice stone to softly buff away dead skin. One important rule: if your heels are already cracked, skip this step entirely — it will only make things worse.
  • Don't forget sun protection. The skin on your feet stays covered all winter, so it's extra sensitive to the sun come summer. SPF isn't just for your face — apply sunscreen to the tops of your feet too before you head out in sandals.
  • Book regular pedicures. If you schedule them ahead of time, your feet never reach the point of needing serious intervention. And a professional treatment is about more than looks — a specialist can spot early on if something isn't right.

If you love a good at-home treat between appointments, these pedicure ideas will make you want to show off your feet.

What to do if your heels are already cracked

  • Moisturize twice a day. If you want fast results, morning and evening creaming is non-negotiable. During the day, a light, quick-absorbing cream is enough; at night, go for something thicker and more intensive. One trick that genuinely works: apply a thick layer before bed, pull on a thin pair of socks, and let it soak in overnight. You'll feel the difference by morning.
  • Try a simple at-home dressing. If the cracks are painful, reach for an easy home fix: dab a healing, antiseptic cream — something like a pharmacy repair balm or a zinc-based skin cream — into the cracks, then cover with a plaster. After a few days of consistent care, the skin knits back together and the pain fades.
  • Use an exfoliating mask. If there are no serious cracks yet but you want to stay ahead of the problem, try an at-home acid foot peel. Glycolic and lactic acid gently dissolve dead cells without any filing. No need to overdo it — once every couple of months is plenty.
  • Wear the right shoes. If the cracking is severe, open-heeled sandals aren't your best bet for now — the pressure and exposure only slow healing. Until the skin closes up, stick to closed, well-fitting shoes.

If home care isn't improving things — or if there's an underlying condition like diabetes, eczema, or another skin issue — it's worth seeing a dermatologist. Your feet deserve the same attention you give your face. They just tend to get far less of it.

How long does it take to heal cracked heels?

With consistent care — moisturizing twice a day and protecting the cracks — the skin can knit back together within a few days. Deeper or more stubborn cases naturally take longer.

Why do my heels crack more in summer?

Open sandals expose your feet to extra airflow, which dries the skin out. Walking barefoot, especially on the beach, adds to the effect by both exfoliating and drying the skin at the same time.

Should I exfoliate cracked heels?

No. If your heels are already cracked, skip the foot file or pumice stone — it will only make the damage worse. Focus on moisturizing and protecting the skin instead.

When should I see a dermatologist?

If at-home treatment isn't helping, or if you have a condition like diabetes, eczema, or another skin problem, it's worth getting professional advice rather than waiting it out.
