Aquarius: the one who resists the compulsory
Aquarius likes people enormously and obligation not at all. What she finds difficult is the scripted quality of the season: the same seating plan, the same questions about her life choices, the same traditions defended on the grounds that they are traditions. The resistance is often read as coldness, when it is closer to allergy.
She fares best when she is allowed to contribute something unorthodox — the odd side dish, a ridiculous game, an outing on an unexpected day — and when she chooses one or two gatherings to attend properly instead of appearing joylessly at six. Aquarius is wonderful company when she has opted in rather than been assigned.
Does dreading the festive season mean something is wrong with me?
No. The season concentrates everything at once: family history, money, grief, old roles, less daylight and far too little unstructured time. Feeling heaviness as it approaches is a reasonable response to a demanding set of circumstances, not evidence of a character flaw. If the heaviness becomes persistent, affects your sleep or appetite, or tips into something that feels unmanageable, that is worth raising with your GP or a counsellor rather than carrying alone until January.
How do I decline an invitation without causing a row?
Be warm, be brief, and do not offer a menu of reasons — explanations invite negotiation. "We can't make Boxing Day this year, but we'd love to see you on the Sunday" gives them the affection and an alternative, which is usually what they actually wanted. Say it early, before the plan hardens into an assumption, and resist re-opening the subject every time someone sighs about it.
