I often see couples openly complaining about each other, even when their partner is right there. Using degrading words is a total no-go, no matter how long you’ve been together. I would never grumble about my wife in front of others, especially not with her there—that’s huge disrespect.

Pets

Instead of kids, we have pets. They’re more affordable, easier to manage, and so much more grateful.

Teamwork

Teamwork
After we got married, my husband and I agreed we’re a team, and our goal is to never grow to hate each other. We stick to that, and it works.

Together

All our problems are shared. We tied our lives together to take that on. If you’re not ready for that, don’t get married. Both partners need to give 100% to the relationship, or it won’t work. Sometimes one of us gives only 60%, but then the other steps up next time. Like batteries: when one runs low, the other recharges it, then they switch.

Boundaries

Boundaries
We set our boundaries early on. What matters to each of us and what’s absolutely off-limits. For example, I insisted on a weekly date night and at least two weeks of vacation alone together every year. My husband needed an hour of guitar daily and one guys’ trip annually. It’s also understood that whoever cooks doesn’t do the dishes. These simple rules work great, while many couples we know constantly argue about vacations, alone time, and dish duty.

Love isn’t enough
Love alone doesn’t cut it. While the phrase "love is all you need" is famous, it’s not the full story. Love fades. What counts is what remains—understanding, dedication, and care. That’s what gives a relationship a future. (And hey, a dishwasher helps settle a lot of arguments!)

Marry your best friend. My wife and I met in college and were just friends for two years before dating. That was twenty years ago, and around us, only couples who are best friends stay together. (There are some who haven’t divorced but aren’t happy.) In a good marriage, spouses are best friends. And don’t sweat the small stuff—let it go.

Independence

Independence
Don’t depend on each other too much. It’s unhealthy if one partner becomes overly dependent—financially or emotionally. That creates a risky dynamic: the dependent partner becomes vulnerable, while the other might feel exploited, resentful, or dismissive. Since we’re all human, it’s best when couples are equals.

Planned intimacy

Planned intimacy
I can’t stress enough the power of scheduled intimacy. One time a week, at a set time, planned ahead. (Of course, more is great, but at least one!) This is especially important when you have kids and are tired all week.

Time apart

Time apart
I don’t know how couples who are inseparable do it. Our secret is spending plenty of time apart. Separate hobbies, friends, fun, and travel. This keeps the quality time together fresh and enjoyable.
