When my wife passed away. She was the love of my life, and during our 45 years together, I thought I did everything for her. Then I was left alone, and suddenly I had to cook and clean for myself. So much work! I never realized how much effort it took until I had to do it all. Grocery shopping, cooking, laundry, washing dishes, cleaning the toilet, tidying up, and more. My wife managed all this for me and our three kids while working full-time. She never complained, and to this day, I can’t understand how she did it.

When she broke up with me and soon after started dating a decent, handsome guy with whom she now has a cute little child. That’s when I realized I’d taken my girlfriend for granted and hadn’t put any effort into the relationship—she did it all.

When I was so shaken by her leaving me that I quit drinking. That’s when I finally started seeing clearly—she was right. Life isn’t about going out to get drunk with the guys four or five times a week. I used to think she was just nagging and "not letting me have fun," but I was actually a functioning alcoholic.

When I finally stopped nursing my wounds and started thinking about what she said at the breakup. She was right—I was repeating exactly what I saw growing up: name-calling, hurt feelings, manipulation, constant fighting. If I had listened to my partner, I could have left those toxic patterns behind. Back then, I wouldn’t even hear about it. I was the one upset that she was always criticizing me.

I used to think a little cheating was okay in a long-term relationship—after all, I’m a man, it’s just physical, and I just wanted some variety. Then my next girlfriend cheated on me, and I was crushed. When she begged for forgiveness saying "it didn’t mean anything to her," I realized how much pain I’d caused my ex by doing the same.

When I finally went to therapy after the love of my life left me. It turned out I was replaying my bad relationship with my mother in my romantic life, and my poor girlfriend suffered because I refused to face my past trauma. I spoke harshly, expected to be put above everyone else, controlled and isolated her—all because I didn’t get enough attention from my mom as a child.

When my wife was hospitalized and I had to care for our two kids for two weeks. That opened my eyes to how little I was doing for them and how absent I’d been in their lives. Until then, I thought I was a model dad.

When she accepted a job abroad and I was suddenly left alone. Until then, I was convinced I was the martyr in the relationship because I worked day and night chasing money.

When I realized that women are equal partners and how my dad treated my mom—and how my uncles treated their wives—is not a role model but disrespectful, narrow-minded, and downright ugly.

I left the family nest and immediately moved in with my college girlfriend, then the next one too. That’s how, at 30, I was truly alone for the first time. I never understood why women complained about housework—I always said, "Sorry, but my mom raised four kids; what will you say when we have a baby?" Now I only have to take care of myself, and after a month, I don’t care about the cost—I hired a cleaner, order food every day, and bought a dishwasher.
