She was right—I was repeating exactly what I saw growing up: name-calling, hurt feelings, manipulation, constant fighting. If I had listened to my partner, I could have left those toxic patterns behind. Back then, I wouldn’t even hear about it. I was the one upset that she was always criticizing me.

I used to think a little cheating was okay in a long-term relationship—after all, I’m a man, it’s just physical, and I just wanted some variety. I left the family nest and immediately moved in with my college girlfriend, then the next one too. That’s how, at 30, I was truly alone for the first time. I never understood why women complained about housework—I always said, "Sorry, but my mom raised four kids; what will you say when we have a baby?" Now I only have to take care of myself, and after a month, I don’t care about the cost—I hired a cleaner, order food every day, and bought a dishwasher.
