With insights from Dr. Diána Takács-Tóth, an expert in herbs and chemistry, we explored the real secret behind essential oils’ popularity and why they’re worth including in your plans this season—and beyond.
Essential Oils Truly Affect Us
Have you ever suddenly caught the scent of orange, clove, or cinnamon and felt an instant wave of happiness? Around Christmas, these almost magical aromas are everywhere, and they genuinely influence us. Just a whiff of clove, cinnamon, or orange essential oil can instantly bring to mind cozy images of mulled wine or baked apples.
But why is that? “The impact of essential oils on emotions and mood is sensed through our sense of smell. Smell connects directly to the brain’s limbic system, which governs emotions and memory. That’s why scents can influence mood and emotional states,” explains the expert.

They Support Our Health in Many Ways
These wonderful scents can also benefit our health, making it smart to plan their use not just at Christmas but year-round. “All essential oils affect the human body. About 5% of inhaled essential oil reaches the olfactory epithelium in the nose, while the remaining 95% enters the bloodstream through the lungs and reaches the body’s cells.”
Each essential oil has its unique effects, so it’s helpful to consider which benefits matter most to you before use. “Cold-pressed essential oil from sweet orange peel has a fresh, fruity scent that can uplift and refresh your mood. Orange scent is known to energize, harmonize, and soothe. Clove bud essential oil has a warm, spicy aroma that can be calming and comforting in some cases. It’s also considered a pain reliever and aphrodisiac, though it’s not recommended for young children.”
“Cardamom essential oil smells fresh and spicy, often used to boost alertness and concentration. It also carries sweet and slightly citrusy notes that feel pleasant. Emotionally, diffusing cardamom oil may help ease anger and aggression. Cinnamon essential oil has a warm, spicy scent typical of winter, creating a cozy atmosphere. Its stimulating, warming effect boosts circulation and revitalizes stagnant energy.”
“So these scents aren’t just pleasant—they often support emotional and mental well-being. Individual reactions vary, as scent perception depends heavily on personal experiences and preferences.”
They Can Make Holiday Prep Easier
Holiday prep can be stressful for many of us. If that sounds familiar, essential oils might be just what you need. Diffusing them is a simple way to create a calm, peaceful atmosphere during the busy season. Whether you want to reduce stress, boost relaxation, or just set a joyful mood, there’s a perfect essential oil for you.
“Lavender essential oil is calming and relaxing, helping to ease stress and anxiety. Bergamot’s fresh, citrusy scent can energize and soothe, lifting your spirits and helping you unwind. Pine scent is closely tied to Christmas, bringing a fresh, forest vibe. It can also clear airways and support immunity. Sandalwood has grounding and calming effects, promoting deep relaxation and peace. During Advent, orange blends and pine scents often take center stage—blends like Adventelő and Kedvesfenyves are great choices.”

Using Them Is Easy
If you haven’t tried essential oils yet or want to be sure you’re doing it right, don’t worry—it’s easy to learn. “Use an aroma lamp or electric diffuser to vaporize essential oils. During Advent, a Christmas essential oil blend is a great choice for its disinfecting, immune-boosting, and relaxing effects.”
“Add a few drops of essential oil to a spray bottle filled with water, shake well, and mist your room! Or create your own botanical perfume by mixing essential oils with jojoba oil and massaging it into your wrists and neck! These oils can help create a calmer, more peaceful Christmas atmosphere. Just remember to always use essential oils with care!”
What to Keep in Mind
While essential oils offer many benefits, it’s important to know they can be risky in certain situations or for some people. “One risk is that concentrated essential oils can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions. Always dilute them with a carrier oil before applying directly to skin!”
“Some people may be allergic to specific essential oils. When trying a new oil, do an allergy test first and watch for reactions. Also, children and pets can be more sensitive to essential oils.”
Certain essential oils can be especially dangerous for young children and some animals. Always consult a professional before using essential oils around them. Cinnamon and clove oils are recommended only for children over 6 years old.
“During pregnancy or certain health conditions, consult a specialist before using essential oils, as some have specific contraindications. Cinnamon and clove oils should be avoided during pregnancy. Also, remember essential oils are flammable, so using candle-based diffusers can pose a fire risk. Always follow the device’s instructions carefully!”
“Last but not least, no matter how tempting their scents are, ingesting essential oils can be risky and should only be done under professional guidance. Many essential oils aren’t safe for internal use and can cause serious health issues. Always read the instructions and follow safety guidelines. If you have any doubts about safe use, ask a healthcare or aromatherapy expert for advice,” adds Dr. Diána Takács-Tóth.
