After a breakup, there’s just one question on your mind: why? You obsessively search for answers—what went wrong, what you could have done differently to avoid this. You replay every word and action from your ex, hoping to spot signs you missed. It’s all you can think about—at least most of the time. Sometimes, you step out of the fog and realize this relationship really is over. Pain, despair, and disappointment are the only feelings you can talk about and want to share.

After the questions come the moments when you just can’t believe it happened. It can’t be true! You invested so much time and energy, and your ex meant the world to you. You let them into every part of your life, and imagining no more talks or meetings feels impossible. So, you delay grieving and hold on to hope instead. You hope the relationship can still be saved, reaching out to your ex. You text, talk, and when you see even the smallest kindness, you think there’s still a chance. You’re just not ready to face the truth yet.

The next stage is trying to find a solution. Looking back, you’ll see this phase as humiliating. You start negotiating with your ex, promising to change, to fix everything that went wrong. The thought of not being a couple anymore feels unbearable, and you believe that if you reconcile, everything will be okay. It’s like standing on the edge of a cliff—going back means safety. But stepping forward means falling into darkness. When you bargain, you put all the responsibility on yourself, as if only you are accountable for the relationship’s success—which isn’t true. Understanding this leads you to the next phase.

Often, couples manage to get back together once after a breakup. But this doesn’t always mean good news. They try giving the relationship another chance, but despite their efforts, the good times usually last only a few weeks. Old problems resurface, and you realize you can’t carry the relationship alone. So, the second breakup happens, and you’ll go through the earlier stages again before moving on to the fifth.

Of course, don’t let anger take over, but being able to feel it is a sign you’re moving forward.

The next phase is acceptance. You understand what happened. You stop trying to fix the relationship and no longer crave your ex’s presence—even if you still love them. You’re disappointed, you know you deserve better, and you truly believe it. This kind of acceptance is also a letting go. You don’t do it because you have to, but because you want to. You’re ready to move on and live your own life. Independent, single, and the world’s doors are finally opening wide. You don’t waste time scrolling through your ex’s Facebook profile. You don’t try anymore—you accept what happened and see the relationship as just one chapter in your life.

You’ve been through a tough time, and your heart still hurts, but your ex is no longer on your mind all the time. Where once you hoped for a fresh start with them, now your hopes focus elsewhere.
