The first Housemaid movie pulled thriller fans into a world where nothing was quite what it seemed — and left audiences hungry for more. Now it's confirmed: the sequel is coming, and we finally know exactly when.
The Housemaid turned into one of the most talked-about psychological thrillers of its release, so there was never any real question about a follow-up. The second chapter, The Housemaid's Secret, is already in the works — and it promises to go darker than anything we saw the first time around. Familiar faces are returning, but a few chilling newcomers are joining the story too.
The hit that hooked thriller fans
The first Housemaid film landed in U.S. theaters in late 2025 and quickly became one of the most popular psychological thriller adaptations out there, thanks to its tense atmosphere and a string of jaw-dropping twists.
Based on Freida McFadden's bestselling novel, it introduced audiences to Millie — and once viewers met her, they couldn't look away. So it's no surprise that Lionsgate is already deep into work on the second installment of the trilogy.
What is The Housemaid 2 about?
In the sequel, Millie is trying to build a new life and leave the darkest parts of her past behind. To fund her studies, she takes a job as a housekeeper for a wealthy couple in Manhattan.
At first glance, everything looks perfect. Douglas Garrick is a successful businessman living in an elegant luxury apartment, and he seems like a generous employer. But Millie quickly senses that something is very wrong. His wife, Wendy, almost never appears — and one room in the apartment is strictly off-limits. From behind that locked door, Millie occasionally hears soft crying, and the questions start to pile up.
When she notices that Wendy is carrying what look like injuries, Millie decides to dig for the truth. But in doing so, she risks uncovering a dangerous secret — and putting her own past on the line.
Anyone who has read McFadden's novels already knows the rule: nothing is ever what it seems at first. Expect the film to be packed with the kind of turns you never see coming. If you love this genre, you might also enjoy our look at the first Housemaid thriller.
Kirsten Dunst is stepping in for Amanda Seyfried
One of the biggest changes in the sequel is that Amanda Seyfried's character isn't coming back — Nina Winchester's story wrapped up by the end of the first film.
Taking the spotlight instead is Oscar-nominated actress Kirsten Dunst, who will play Wendy Garrick, the wife of Millie's new employer.
Erin Westerman, president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, has called Dunst an exceptionally versatile and fearless performer — one who could form a powerful on-screen pairing with Sydney Sweeney. She believes Dunst's presence will take this mysterious, nothing-is-as-it-seems world to a whole new level.
Paul Anthony Kelly plays the mysterious Douglas Garrick
Another key new addition is Paul Anthony Kelly, who takes on the role of Douglas Garrick.
On the surface, Douglas looks like a confident, successful businessman living the high life in a lavish penthouse with his wife. But it soon becomes clear that serious secrets lurk behind his behavior. He insists that Wendy is gravely ill and can't leave the apartment — yet Millie keeps noticing signs that hint at a very different story.
For Kelly, this marks another major film role, coming shortly after he played John F. Kennedy Jr. in Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette.
Sydney Sweeney is back as Millie
Sydney Sweeney returns for the sequel, so we'll get to keep following Millie's story. Many fans considered her performance one of the strongest parts of the first film, so it's no shock the studio is once again building the story around her.
Michele Morrone is also back, reprising his role as Enzo.
Behind the camera, Paul Feig returns to direct, with Rebecca Sonnenshine writing the screenplay. Author Freida McFadden is on board as an executive producer — a promising sign that the film will stay true to the tone that made the books so addictive.
The release date is officially set
The studio has confirmed that The Housemaid's Secret will hit theaters on December 17, 2027.
Filming begins this fall, which means fans still have a bit of a wait ahead. The premiere date was announced on the film's official social media channels.
In the meantime, read the books
If you don't want to wait years to find out what happens to Millie, you can pick up Freida McFadden's hugely popular series right now.
The books in the series are:

There's also a novella, The Bride, which bridges the events between the second and third books in the trilogy.
The novels have been enormous hits worldwide, and based on where the second story goes, it's easy to imagine the film series pushing The Housemaid to even greater heights.
