The story takes place before Elle stepped into Harvard Law School, where she shattered stereotypes in her pink suits and proved that a stylish blonde can be smart, brave, and determined. Now, we finally get to see who Elle Woods was before she became Legally Blonde and how she grew into the inspiring role model loved by millions.
Reese Witherspoon’s Dream Comes True
The idea for the series came directly from Reese Witherspoon, who not only starred in the Legally Blonde films but now also actively shapes her iconic character’s story as a producer – according to Harper’s BAZAAR. Earlier this year on The Tonight Show, she shared how the concept of Elle was born:
“I watched that Wednesday Addams series and thought, ‘Why not show Elle Woods as a high schooler?’ I was curious about who she was before college and law school. Ideas kept coming, then these amazing writers brought a fantastic vision, and now Amazon is making the series, called Elle.”
The series is a joint project between Witherspoon’s production company Hello Sunshine and Amazon MGM Studios. Filming began in March 2025, according to an interview with People magazine, and the premiere is expected on Prime Video in summer 2026.
Meet the New Elle Woods
The casting process lasted months, and Lexi Minetree landed the lead role as the new Elle Woods. The young actress has appeared in smaller roles before, but now she’s stepping into the spotlight. Witherspoon shared her excitement on Instagram:
“Let me introduce you to the new Elle Woods. We saw so many amazing auditions for @PrimeVideo’s new prequel series, but we finally found our Elle. And today, I get to share the news myself! Meet @leximinetree!”
Following the announcement, the first official promo image arrived in May. Lexi Minetree is pictured sitting in an American high school classroom, head tilted slightly, dressed head to toe in pink. On the desk in front of her are pink notebooks and, of course, the legendary fluffy pen.
“I’m beyond excited that Lexi Minetree is playing Elle Woods. She steps into this role with grace, ambition, and charm.”
What Will Elle Be About?
The series is set in the late ’90s and early 2000s, following Elle as a high school student discovering her style, voice, and place in the world.
Witherspoon told Deadline, “Fans will finally see how Elle navigated the twists and turns of her teenage years with her signature wit and unique style. What could be better?!”
The show will explore Elle’s family life, friendships, high school drama – everything that shaped the confident, smart, and stylish woman we all fell in love with later.
Laura Kittrell, who previously worked on HBO’s Insecure, is the showrunner. The production team also includes Marc Platt, Lauren Neustadter, and Lauren Kisilevsky alongside Witherspoon.
A Generation’s Favorite, Reimagined
Many of us agree that Legally Blonde is more than just a comedy: Elle Woods became a true inspiration for many. The iconic pink suit and law degree combo has grown into a pop culture symbol. Elle proved that intelligence, authenticity, and femininity can shine together.
The Elle series promises to be both a nostalgic look back at a beloved character’s youth and a fresh, empowering story about teens exploring identity, self-acceptance, and confidence. Expect a fun nod to early 2000s fashion and vibes too. Trendy mini skirts, flip phones, French manicures, and raspberry-colored headbands will make a comeback – well, at least the ones still in style!
Nostalgia Is in Full Bloom
It’s no surprise Hollywood keeps revisiting past hits. Nostalgia is thriving: shows like Wednesday, Gossip Girl, and That ’90s Show all tap into that feeling of returning to simpler times. Elle will offer this experience to a new generation and longtime fans alike. And chances are, we’ll see even more series like this in the future.
