You know that feeling when you slip on a pair of shoes you've worn a hundred times and something just feels… off? Not bad, exactly — just a little tired. Chances are, the shoes aren't the problem. What's missing is that one detail that makes an outfit feel intentional. And right now, that detail is the shoelace.

What was once purely functional has quietly become one of the most talked-about styling elements of the season. Lace, satin, organza, and pearl-adorned shoelaces are transforming everyday footwear — and the best part? You don't have to spend a cent on new shoes.

How did shoelaces become a fashion statement?

It didn't happen overnight. The shift crept in gradually — first spotted on stylists and fashion bloggers, then on runways, and finally exploding across TikTok and Instagram. Today, it's nearly impossible to scroll through your feed without coming across a pair of shoes where the laces are the whole point.

The idea is simple but powerful: a shoelace doesn't just hold your shoe together — it gives it character. A chunky sporty sneaker threaded with soft organza suddenly feels romantic. A classic ballet flat tied with a satin ribbon becomes both elegant and playful. It's that contrast — hard and soft, sporty and feminine — that makes this trend so compelling.

Lace and satin: the two biggest favourites

If there are two materials leading this trend, it's lace and satin. Both bring a completely different mood, but follow the same principle: texture and material are what transform the shoe.

Lace laces — like those seen on the green and pink Adidas Gazelle — take a simple everyday sneaker and make it instantly romantic and eye-catching. The contrast of white lace against suede creates a visual tension that's hard to ignore.

Satin, on the other hand, leans elegant and refined. A black satin ribbon threaded through a dark floral ballet flat feels simultaneously dramatic and polished. And the best part? These laces are incredibly affordable and take just minutes to swap in. The result, though, looks like an entirely new shoe.

Pearls, organza, and other statement options

But the trend doesn't stop at lace and satin. For those who want something truly unique, pearl shoelaces offer an unexpectedly beautiful effect on a sporty sneaker. The combination of pearls and athletic shoes might sound surprising at first — but that tension is exactly what makes it so striking.

Organza ribbons are also having a major moment. Lightweight and semi-sheer, they create an almost ethereal, floating quality — as if the shoe itself is dancing. Whether you go for blush pink, crisp white, or warm écru, the result can read as innocent and romantic or bold and dramatic depending on the shoe you pair it with.

Two different laces on one shoe

For the truly daring, there's an even bolder approach: mixing two different laces on the same shoe. One half in a different material or colour than the other. Done intentionally, it looks surprisingly good — and guaranteed to get people asking where you got your shoes.

Think a white lace on the upper eyelets and a tan one below. The shoe becomes instantly one-of-a-kind. This technique works especially well on sneakers with plenty of eyelets, where the contrast has room to really show up.

Even Crocs are getting in on it

If you needed any more proof that this trend has truly taken over, here it is: Crocs have joined the party. Yes, really. It might sound absurd at first — but somehow it works. There's something very deliberate and self-aware about it, which fits perfectly with where fashion is right now: unexpected pairings, a sense of humour, and a celebration of individuality.

It also proves that this trend isn't reserved for expensive or elegant footwear. It works on any shoe, which is what makes it so democratic — and so fun.

The shoelace trend is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to refresh your shoe collection without buying a single new pair. A little lace, a satin ribbon, a handful of pearls — and a shoe you've ignored for months suddenly becomes the one everyone notices. Sometimes that's all it takes to give an old favourite a completely new life.
