Clothes get all the scrutiny, but accessories are what fix an outfit in time. A jacket from three seasons ago reads as classic; a matching bag, belt and shoe set reads as a decade. It happens quietly, because accessories are the things we buy least often and love longest, and because nothing about them ever wears out enough to force a rethink. Here are five habits I see constantly on women who are otherwise dressing beautifully — and what to reach for instead, without spending a fortune or throwing out anything you love.

The full matching set

Bag, shoes and belt in identical shades of tan, navy or burgundy was once the mark of a well-put-together woman. Now it reads as a uniform, and worse, it flattens the whole outfit into one block of colour with three punctuation marks in the same tone. The eye has nothing to travel towards.

The swap is to match two out of three at most, or to match nothing and instead pick up a colour that appears in your top or scarf. Contrast is what makes an outfit look chosen rather than assembled. A tan bag with black boots is not a mistake — it is the point.

The default nude court shoe

The low-vamp beige court became the reflex answer to "what shoes go with this" and it works, technically. But a shoe that is trying to disappear also drains character from a look, and after years of the same silhouette it starts to date the trousers above it.

Modern alternatives are more comfortable anyway: a substantial loafer, a block-heeled boot under wider trousers, a clean leather trainer with a tailored piece, a slingback with an actual shape to the heel. If you love the lengthening effect of a nude shoe, keep one pair for occasions and let something with more weight carry the everyday.

The tiny, fussily knotted scarf

A small square silk scarf tied tightly at the throat is a specific style signature, and on the right woman with the right haircut it's wonderful. Worn out of habit, it tends to close off the neckline and pull the whole face-frame inwards.

Bigger and looser is doing better: a large square folded into a triangle and let sit over the shoulders, a long scarf simply doubled and pulled through, or the scarf moved elsewhere entirely — knotted on a bag handle, threaded as a belt. Same silk, different century.

Jewellery that has shrunk out of view

Very fine chains and small studs are lovely close up and invisible from two metres, especially over knitwear or a collar. When the only jewellery in an outfit disappears, the outfit reads as unfinished, and we compensate by adding more small pieces until the effect is busy rather than bold.

The swap is one deliberate piece with presence: a sculptural hoop, a wide cuff, a chunky chain worn alone, a large stone ring. Layer if you love layering, but let one piece lead. Strong, simple metal near the face is one of the fastest ways to look current.

The stiff, short-strapped shoulder bag

A structured bag with a strap that sits high under the arm forces a particular posture — elbow clamped, shoulder raised — and the silhouette it creates is instantly recognisable as another era. It also tends to be the piece with the most tired hardware, because we carry it daily for years.

Softer shapes with longer straps sit better on a modern outfit: a slouchy shoulder bag with a drop that reaches the hip, a crossbody worn diagonally over a coat, a roomy tote carried in the hand. Check the hardware on the bags you're keeping, too. Scuffed gold-tone plating ages a look faster than the shape ever will.

Does this mean I should get rid of my classics?

Absolutely not, and please don't. Almost everything on this list is fine in isolation — the problem is nearly always the automatic combination, three or four dated habits stacked in one outfit. Keep the pieces you love and break the set instead: wear the court shoes with a bolder bag, the small scarf with a big earring, the structured bag with trainers.

If I only update one accessory, what should it be?

Shoes, every time. They set the proportion of the trousers, they change how you walk and stand, and they are the item most people look at without realising. One pair of well-made, comfortable shoes in a current shape will modernise a whole wardrobe of clothes you already own — far more than a new coat would.
