Everyone has flaws because we’re human. No one has a perfectly symmetrical face, flawless skin, or body. The spotlight effect happens when you think others constantly notice your flaws and awkward moments. This makes you feel ugly because you believe your imperfections stand out even more. That’s why many feel bad about a pimple or a bad hair day. But it’s worth reminding yourself that people aren’t scrutinizing you nonstop—they’re usually focused on themselves, not whether you plucked your eyebrows.

We all know how much others’ opinions matter, especially since every era has its own beauty ideal that many want to emulate. It’s tough to reach a place where you don’t care, but it’s so worth it. Sure, many self-help talks say to be kind to yourself and value your own opinion above all. But it takes real inner work to get there. Everywhere you look, there are perfectly edited photos of flawless bodies and faces—often far from reality. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed by this, but the change starts within you, so you can see the beautiful person looking back in the mirror—inside and out.

Mental health can shape how you see yourself. Depression can make you feel worthless and lower your confidence. Those with body dysmorphic disorder often fixate on parts of their body they believe are ugly and try to “fix” them, which causes a lot of stress. People struggling with eating disorders may see themselves as overweight and resort to harmful behaviors like extreme dieting, as in anorexia.

If you don’t like how you look in photos, it might be because you’re used to your mirror image, and anything different feels off. Lighting, camera angles, and posing all affect how you appear in pictures. You might also always think you’re the least photogenic in group photos. That’s because you see everyone else’s face as it really is, but not your own. Another reason is that mirrors soften facial asymmetry, and since no one’s face is perfectly symmetrical, you might not like your photo reflection.
