Grab Your Calendar: Here’s the 2025/2026 School Year Schedule and Holidays — Family
In this article

Do you love planning your days or prefer to let the moment find you? Either way, the 2025/2026 school year offers special chances to make the most of it.

Did you know the next school year starts on September 1 and ends on June 19? That’s a total of 181 school days for our kids. It feels both long and short—looking back, it always flies by in a flash.

How Planning Breaks Ahead Can Brighten Your Daily Life

Filling in your family calendar is like drawing a map for your year’s story. Marking important dates not only makes your year clearer but also helps everyone feel calmer—because you’ll know when to expect quality family time or some well-deserved "me time."

Knowing the long weekends and breaks in advance means less rushed mornings—no surprises from a short week. With a few smartly chosen extra days off, you can even create a full week around the autumn or spring break. Kids appreciate the planning too; knowing when the next break is coming makes school days easier to handle.

School Breaks – Here’s Your Framework to Play With

Autumn Break: October 23 – November 2, 2025
The last school day is October 22, and classes resume November 3—giving you an 11-day break. Perfect for off-peak travel, but even if you stay local, there’s plenty to enjoy: autumn hikes, pumpkin or potato festivals, winery visits… Since the break starts on a Wednesday, taking Monday and Tuesday off means you can enjoy up to 16 days of pure fun including the preceding weekend.

Winter Break: December 20, 2025 – January 5, 2026
This 16-day break is ideal for family celebrations, rest, or even a trip to a warmer climate. Flight prices are still quite reasonable for pleasant destinations—if skiing isn’t your thing. For those staying home, winter break is perfect for cozying up: board game marathons, hot chocolate and movie nights, ice skating, or exploring indoor play centers.

Spring Break: April 2 – 12, 2026
The Easter period offers a great chance for a spring getaway, a wellness weekend, or if weather permits, hiking and picnics, or an early-season vacation. The break starts on a Thursday, similar to autumn break. With three days off starting May 30 (Monday), you can plan a 14-day rest. (Plus, it’s easier to manage those few days off for the kids since the school year is almost over.) If you’re staying local, exciting activities await: gardening, Easter egg painting, bike tours, or city explorations, all brightened by spring sunshine.

Last School Day: June 19, 2026
This year, the school year ends before June wraps up, so you can kick off summer the very next day with a family outing—whether it’s a long weekend at Lake Balaton, a festival, or a relaxed vacation, all without the crowds.

Public Holidays and Long Weekends—Not Just for Parents

Even without kids, long weekends are golden: short city breaks, mountain getaways, or food and wine tours fill these days perfectly. These few days offer great chances to discover new places:

  • 1956 Revolution: October 23-26, 2025: 4-day long weekend
  • Christmas: December 24-28, 2025: 5-day long weekend
  • New Year: January 1-4, 2026: 4-day long weekend
  • Easter: April 3-6, 2026: 4 days off without taking leave
  • Labor Day: May 1-3, 2026: 3 days off without taking leave
  • Pentecost: May 25, 2026: 3-day long weekend without taking leave

Grab your calendar and start filling the year ahead with colors! We’ve been doing this for a while—sharing a Google calendar where everyone has their own color, and breaks and trips are marked with different shades. It keeps the whole family’s plans clear, flexible, and easy to follow.
