For years I was convinced that real rest meant a week of total stillness — spa robes, quiet pools, nothing to do. But long wellness breaks never actually recharged me. I've always been drawn to faster, more active trips instead.

So this summer, after a stretch of exhausting weeks, I surprised even myself. On a sudden impulse — pushed along by a group of friends — I said yes to a one-day guided kayak trip. And it turned out to be one of the best decisions I've made all year.

Stepping way outside my comfort zone

My initial excitement was quickly clouded by doubt. As I packed, I kept wondering whether I'd bitten off more than I could chew.

I worried about swarms of mosquitoes, the sweltering summer heat, and above all the paddling itself — I'd had surgery not long before, and I'd been rationing physical effort down to the last drop ever since.

But by then there was no turning back. Near a quiet riverside village, at a charming private dock, we lowered the canoes into the water. And the moment the first ripples brushed against the hull, my fears began to quietly melt away.

The cherry on top: our group had only three people instead of the four the canoe was built for, so our guide climbed in as our helmsman. That gave me a huge sense of security as we slalomed between fallen trees — and it also meant we got every local secret and fascinating story firsthand.

From there, the paddling came surprisingly easily. On the wider, more open stretches we practically flew, sometimes hitting speeds of around 6 miles per hour (10 km/h) — an incredibly freeing, flowing feeling.

Where the signal drops and nature takes over

The wild, storybook world of this river landscape pulled me in from the very first moment. As soon as we glided into the labyrinth of dense, lush green branches, the noise of the city and the constant mental buzzing in my head went completely silent.

There was no chasing a signal, no flashing notifications, no urge to check my inbox. My senses were entirely taken up by the soothing sound of the water and the endless things there were to see. Everywhere I looked, something felt magical.

The weather turned out to be kind, too. Instead of stifling heat, we got a pleasant 73–77°F (23–25°C). And when it briefly started to rain, we simply pulled ashore under a huge mulberry tree — and picked sweet fruit straight from its branches while we waited it out.

If you've ever wondered why it's so hard to switch off on holiday, this is the kind of trip that answers the question without you even trying.

We ate lunch in front of beaver lodges

This region hides the kind of fairy-tale wonders I'd never seen on any of my previous water trips — and I've paddled some beautiful places. Experiencing them took our guide's expertise, of course, as he led us down hidden, tucked-away channels.

We admired the untouched wildlife up close: beaver lodges, nesting grey herons, families of swans and wild ducks drifting past, while all kinds of fish and frogs darted through the water plants.

When lunchtime came, we lived out a genuinely magical little ritual. All seven canoes navigated side by side, we linked up tightly on the water, and — like one enormous, gently rocking raft — we ate our sandwiches together on a sheltered, quiet stretch.

The highlight of the day came at the very end: a hidden, shallow, sandy-pebbled beach where we dangled our feet in the cool water in the shade of the trees, while the braver ones went in for a full swim.

By evening my body was tired from head to toe — but mentally I felt a kind of clean, complete refreshment I'd needed for a very long time.

I know this isn't everyone's idea of the perfect break. I'd guess even in our group there was someone trying this for the first and last time, and sometimes what we really need is the comfort of a hotel.

But for me, those four to five hours of active paddling switched my brain off entirely. I somehow found time for everything — everything except dwelling on my to-do list or my worries. And honestly, what more could you ask of a day off?

Is a kayak trip suitable if you're not very fit?

In my experience, yes — with the right support. Having an experienced guide as helmsman made the paddling feel easy and safe, even soon after surgery when I was being cautious with physical effort.

How long was the kayak trip?

It was a one-day guided tour, with roughly four to five hours of active paddling, plus stops for lunch and a swim along the way.

What can you see on a river kayak tour like this?

On our trip we spotted beaver lodges, nesting grey herons, families of swans and wild ducks, and plenty of fish and frogs moving through the water plants — all in an untouched, peaceful setting.

Is an active trip really more relaxing than a spa week?

It depends on the person. For me, the paddling completely quieted my mind in a way long, passive wellness breaks never did — but there are still times when hotel comfort is exactly what you need.
