Every summer, Lake Balaton means the same thing to me: slowing down, warm sunshine, long walks along the water, good food, and a kind of calm that's hard to find anywhere else.
I love discovering new spots each year — but there are three beaches I return to again and again. Each one has a completely different mood, yet they share the same qualities: they're clean, well-kept, family-friendly, and they offer plenty to do beyond simply lying by the water.
If you're planning a Balaton getaway this year, these three places deserve a spot on your list.
1. Szigliget village beach — where every detail of a lakeside day is just right
If I had to recommend a single beach on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, it would be the Szigliget village beach. We've been coming back for years, because every single time the same carefully tended, tidy environment welcomes us.
One of the beach's biggest strengths is its cleanliness. The restrooms are always spotless — which, over a full day at the beach, is far from a minor detail. The grassy area is beautifully maintained, and the view of the lake from here is simply stunning.
The food is another reason we keep returning. One of our favourite spots is Art Café, where they make what I think is some of the best coffee in the area. And their iced matcha latte has never let me down either.
When lunchtime rolls around, there's no debate: we head straight to Oszi bácsi's fish grill, where, as someone with a gluten intolerance, I've always been able to eat safely. The freshly grilled fish is excellent, and the fish platters are not only generous but genuinely beautiful — you get hungry just looking at them. We don't always eat out at the beach, but this is the one place we make sure to sit down.
For the 2026 season, beach admission prices are as follows:
- adult day ticket: around $4.30,
- child day ticket: around $2.90,
- family ticket: around $11.40 (2 adults and 2 children aged 3–18; each additional child aged 3–18 costs around $2.90).
But a day in Szigliget rarely ends at the beach for us. We almost always stop by the charming Szigliget ice cream parlour near the castle, known for its special, handcrafted flavours. And after a scoop or two, we usually take another stroll through the village.
Even when the weather isn't right for swimming, Szigliget never disappoints. More than once we've had lunch first at Oszi bácsi's fish grill, then walked up to the Óvár lookout point, which in our experience far fewer people know about than the famous Szigliget Castle — but it's every bit worth the time.
Other times we've hiked the nearby Szent György Hill or visited the Stone Sea at Szentbékkálla, always making a point of passing through Szigliget. That's exactly why I love this region: swimming and nature walks complement each other perfectly.
2. Örvényes Beach — a quiet lakeside retreat
Some beaches buzz with life; others are where you truly switch off. Örvényes Beach — also known as the Wild Duck free beach — belongs firmly to the second category.
The beach is completely free to visit, with no entrance fee at all, yet the surroundings are still tidy and well cared for. We've never run into big crowds here — the atmosphere has always been calm.
Good news for those arriving by car: the car park in front of the beach is free, and cyclists will find a bike rack too.
Alongside the well-kept grassy area, there are sun decks, indoor and outdoor showers, and accessible restrooms that make the whole day more comfortable. The restrooms are clean and tidy — always a pleasant surprise.
There are two snack bars and a restaurant on the beach, serving classic Balaton beach food, some more unusual treats, and plenty of cold drinks.
If you're after something more active, you can rent a pedal boat or a SUP board, and there's a beach volleyball court for anyone in the mood for a game.
What makes Örvényes special is that it has held on to that old-school Balaton feeling you can find in fewer and fewer places these days — while still feeling modern. If you're craving real peace and quiet, you'll fall for this beach.
3. Balatonlelle free beach — a paradise of gently deepening water and long summer walks
When we head to the southern shore, we almost always choose Balatonlelle. And for good reason: the town has more than four kilometres (about 2.5 miles) of free shoreline, the best-known stretch of which is the 1.8-kilometre (roughly 1.1-mile) Balatonlelle free beach.
One of the beach's biggest advantages is the gently deepening water. That's not only ideal for families with small children, but also for anyone who enjoys wading in comfortably instead of hitting deep water after just a few steps.
The well-tended, wide grassy shore offers plenty of room for sunbathing and relaxing. The entire beach is free to visit, while a range of amenities is still on hand.
For those who want even more, you can rent a pedal boat, a surfboard or a small electric boat — and there's also a water adventure park, a giant slide and tennis courts.
The location is excellent, too. The train station and bus stop are just a few minutes' walk away, and drivers will find several car parks nearby.
During the official beach season — from 22 June to 30 August 2026 — a lifeguard service is on duty every day between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.
For us, a day in Balatonlelle always has one more must-stop: Sanyika's fish grill. We've been coming back for years for a bowl of hearty bean goulash or crispy fried hake with fries. It's a special bonus that, with a gluten intolerance, I can eat here safely too — and even pick from a wide range of dishes.
The promenade is lined with plenty of other cosy restaurants, cafés and ice cream shops, but even if you're not stopping to eat or drink, the walk alone is worth it.
Lake Balaton is always a safe bet
There are countless excellent beaches along the shores of Lake Balaton, but for me these three are a sure thing every single year. In Szigliget, I love lingering for the beautifully kept surroundings, the delicious fish dishes and the hiking options. In Örvényes, the quiet and the closeness of nature calm me down. And in Balatonlelle, the gently deepening water, the long free beach and the lakeside walks create that special summer feeling that keeps drawing me back.
