Half of Hungarians Now Choose Private Doctors – Even If It Costs More — Lifestyle

Expensive but fast, predictable, and safe – that’s why more and more people are turning to private healthcare.

As health becomes a key focus in modern life, the demand for quick, quality, and secure medical care is rising. NN Insurance’s latest Private Doctor Price Index reveals a striking fact: today, half of Hungarians choose private medical services, even if it means a significant financial commitment.

Numbers you can’t ignore

The study shows the average cost of a specialist or diagnostic exam is about $84 USD. This represents over 7% of the median monthly net income ($1,130 USD), yet more people are choosing this option rather than waiting months for an appointment in the public system.

Prices vary widely, for example:

  • gynecological exams: $70–115 USD,
  • dermatology check-ups: sometimes double that,
  • rural vs. Budapest: the same exam can be $20–23 USD cheaper outside the capital,
  • dentistry, gynecology, and lab tests are the most common private visits.

The research also highlights the most popular private services among Hungarians:

  • dentistry – half of respondents visited a private dentist in the past two years,
  • gynecology and obstetrics – 28%,
  • laboratory tests – 25%,
  • ophthalmology – 22%,
  • ultrasound and other imaging diagnostics – 20%.

These figures confirm that private care is sought not just for cosmetic reasons but also for quality-of-life and preventive health checks.

Speed, quality, attention – what we pay for

Half of Hungarians have already chosen private healthcare in the past two years, and 70% plan to continue doing so. The reasons are clear:

  • shorter wait times,
  • reliable, high-quality services,
  • more personalized care.

Many decide to stick with private providers after their first visit. While only 22% reported positive experiences in the public system, 83% had positive experiences in private care.

Fear of infections also plays a role:

  • 60% fear infections in public institutions,
  • only 16% feel this way about private facilities.

One-third of respondents trust private healthcare more, and 22% highlighted receiving comprehensive care from diagnosis through follow-up.

Essential for young people, strategic for companies

Private healthcare’s popularity is growing especially among younger generations, who see paying for speed and quality as natural. Still, costs deter many, with 81% paying out of pocket for medical exams.

Employers play an increasing role, as offering private healthcare benefits can boost employee health, loyalty, and retention.

The price is high, but the payoff is even greater

Private healthcare isn’t cheap – but Hungarian patients seem willing to pay for the time, attention, and quality they receive. Often, it’s not a luxury but a necessity: when urgent exams, a calm environment, or simply predictability matter, private clinics offer a real alternative for many.
