Have You Ever Seen a Sun Dog? 8 Special Celestial Phenomena That Are Like a Miracle

This special phenomenon has nothing to do with fire or rain. A fire rainbow can be observed when sunlight hits ice crystals in cirrus clouds at exactly a 58-degree angle. These clouds are located above 5 kilometers in altitude. The phenomenon was last observed in Hungary 2 years ago at Lake Balaton.

Lenticular clouds get their name from their shape. They are most commonly seen around mountain peaks or very tall skyscrapers, as they form due to standing waves in the air. They are mostly observed in the winter and spring months.

If anything, this phenomenon looks quite frightening, although its formation is also quite unusual. It can be observed during volcanic eruptions, caused by friction between ash and other particles. It is a complex process, but essentially, electrical charge is generated in the volcanic cloud.

Polar stratospheric clouds are found at altitudes of 15,000–25,000 meters, where the air is cold and dry. The setting sun is lower than the clouds, which reflect its rays, creating the colorful, pearlescent effect. They are only seen in polar regions around sunrise and sunset.

A sun dog is also a stunning phenomenon that occurs when light refracts through ice crystals in the atmosphere. As a result, one of the halo phenomena becomes visible, and a ring of light appears around the sun disk.

This is a very rare phenomenon, recognizable by the pouch-like protrusions hanging from the bottom of thunderstorm clouds. It predicts approaching rain and storms, so if you see such formations in the sky, it’s advisable to take shelter. Mammatus clouds can appear anywhere except the South Pole and form from cold air.

Similar to the "traditional" rainbow, the white version is also created with the help of ice crystals in high clouds. In foggy weather or when the Moonlight is stronger, the light illuminates tiny water droplets, creating the white arc. This phenomenon is often observed in Hungary as well.
