Because then there are those weeks when everything falls apart. An urgent project drops in that you just can’t say no to. My daughter gets sick and can’t go to daycare, so I’m juggling a laptop in one hand and a thermometer in the other, trying to be fully present in both roles. Or sometimes a personal challenge takes all my focus and energy. By the time Friday afternoon rolls around, all I have left is exhaustion.
When that happens, if I can, I try to recharge over the weekend. Yes, I know social media is full of self-care tips, but here are the ones that truly work for me.
Cleaning Up

It might not sound relaxing, but cleaning is actually therapeutic for me. The repetitive motions—especially vacuuming or folding clothes—help me switch off my brain. Plus, there’s something empowering about regaining control: when life feels chaotic, at least I can create order in my home. That alone eases my anxiety.
I’ve also noticed that when I’m close to a mental downward spiral, clutter around me only makes it worse. But when things are clean and in their place, I feel like I have a safe space. My little kingdom, arranged just the way I like it. Once that "clean slate" is set, I can recharge better with other tools too.
Nature

When the pressure is really high, I always try to get outside. You don’t have to be a hiker—just a walk in the City Park can do wonders. But if I can, I go a bit further: Normafa, Hármashatár Hill, or the Danube Bend are all reachable in an afternoon and truly give that “I’m in the wild” feeling.
It’s not really about exercise, but the quiet. How a bird’s song sounds different without car noise nearby. How you can rest on a tree trunk and just gaze ahead. Maybe it works so well for me because I grew up in the countryside, but I genuinely believe nature helps everyone. So if you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by noise—inside or out—I can’t encourage you enough to try it. Find your nearest forest, grab comfy shoes and a water bottle, and go for a walk! I promise you’ll feel the weight you’ve carried all week melt off your shoulders.
Sushi in the Bathtub

Okay, this is my little quirky ritual. But for me, perfect self-care means sinking into a hot, fragrant, bubbly bath, starting an episode of a show, and eating sushi. It might not be everyone’s combo, but it works for me. Water calms me down, and sushi feels both like a celebration and comfort food: the meal I eat when I want to tell myself, “You deserve this.” Whether I’ve achieved something or just survived the week.
So sushi in the tub is my ritual. A signal to myself that this hour is all about me. Everyone’s ritual will look different, but you can create your own space, scent, food, and temperature where you feel most comfortable. Whatever that is, make it a ritual—a time when all your senses are wrapped in comfort.
These weekend rituals don’t solve everything, but they help me show up fresh on Monday. Sometimes, that’s the best gift we can give ourselves.
