The usually bustling towns are quieter now, most of the lángos stands have closed, and fewer people stroll along the shore. But this is when wildlife comes alive, revealing wonders hidden from summer crowds. Lace up your hiking shoes and explore the southern shore’s best viewpoints, offering a fresh perspective on the northern shore’s beauty. Here are our top three southern shore towns. Fonyód boasts three lookout towers (Walkó, Sipos-hegy, and Várhegy). Romance is alive here too, with the Crypt Villa, a pilgrimage spot for lovers. Magdus and Ödön rest in a stone-carved bed. Legend says if lovers reach over and hold hands above them, their love will last forever and their future will be blissful.

It’s not just about viewpoints here. In Zamárdi, peek through the heart-shaped opening of the "Heart of Balaton" sculpture to catch a unique view of the Tihany Benedictine Abbey like never before. On cooler days, cozy up in one of the many chapels or churches along the southern shore, or explore museums and exhibitions filled with hidden gems.

The Attila József Memorial House honors his legacy with an interactive exhibit exploring the final chapter of his life. Fishing enthusiasts will find plenty of options here, with three fishing lakes and the Balaton itself offering chances to try new baits. This makes for a great autumn activity with kids. In the town center, a mini pilgrimage path called the Path of Renewal invites visitors to reflect and recharge along its ten stations. Balatonszárszó is a perfect getaway, even solo.

If you ask me which part of Hungary I’d recommend to every foreign traveler, the Káli Basin is my top pick. It’s not just one of Hungary’s, but one of the world’s most beautiful places, stunning in every season. Autumn dresses the landscape in colors that words can’t capture. The nearby Balaton is just the cherry on top, though visitors here often seek peace away from the lake’s summer buzz. The picturesque basin is home to many wineries, perfect for a wine tour with friends or family. Káptalantóti means one thing: market. The Liliomkert market is famous for its local goods and friendly vendors. Open every Sunday year-round, it offers homemade cheese, artisan foods and cosmetics, fresh veggies and fruits, jams and preserves straight from grandma’s pantry, smoked meats, homemade cakes, and strudels. And the cheerful market folks make it worth the visit alone.

When the Káli Basin comes up, Káptalantóti and Köveskál usually steal the spotlight. But Mindszentkálla is a hidden gem that instantly captures your heart. It’s perfect for couples seeking quiet or families looking for a refreshing escape. The local flora and fauna are truly enchanting, especially around Kopasz Hill, which towers over the village. Between Mindszentkálla and Szentbékkálla lies the famous Stone Sea. A short hike leads you to this fascinating site, where giant oddly-shaped stones look like they were left behind by playful giants. Along the Sásdi stream, the Theodora-Kékkő Nature Trail connects Szentbékkálla and Mindszentkálla, featuring 15 stations that explore Earth’s nearly 4.5 billion-year history. Just follow the beetle-shaped stones along the path.

Known as the southern gateway to the Káli Basin, Kővágóörs includes Pálköve as well. It’s a fantastic spot for mushroom hunting and enjoying cool oak forests that turn bright yellow in autumn. Here you’ll find the Stone Sea, a rare geological formation that extends underground almost as far as it does above ground. Kővágóörs is truly a fantastic hiking destination.

For us, Eger is a true jewel of northern Hungary. It’s not just about the Eger Castle or Gárdonyi’s famous novel, "Stars of Eger," but the palpable sense of history at every step. The city itself is stunning, and the surrounding area offers even more charming spots to explore. Noszvaj, a small village in the Bükkalja region, impresses in every way. Its lush vegetation and captivating wildlife are highlights. The local cuisine stands out across Hungary, matched only by the warm hospitality. Cozy guesthouses, friendly hotels, and glamping sites welcome visitors. Autumn is perfect for forest walks and discovering the De la Motte Castle, built in the elegant Copf style. Now a hotel, some of its beautiful rooms are open as a museum. The 19th-century cave dwellings carved into volcanic riolite tuff are another fascinating attraction. Since the 1990s, an artist colony has thrived here, continuously shaping these unique homes.

Just 5 km from Eger, in the Laskó stream valley, lies Egerszalók. Its most famous feature is the warm thermal spring bursting from 410 meters deep. The 65-68°C (149-154°F) healing water offers wonderful relief for the body, and the spectacular limestone deposits it creates are a natural wonder to behold. Rich in hydrogen carbonate, sulfur, magnesium, sodium, and calcium, the water is especially beneficial for bone injuries, joint issues, and rheumatic conditions.
