"My dad died the hour my son was born, and he has the same birthmark on his foot"

I spotted my ex’s favorite chocolate in a store and bought some. That evening, while enjoying the treat, I wondered how he was doing—I hadn’t heard from him in ten years. When I looked him up online, I found out that was the day of his funeral.

My son’s birth is a bittersweet memory because he was born the very hour my dad passed away. Dad’s death was sudden—he was rushing to the hospital to see me when he had a fatal accident on the highway. My son has a birthmark on his ankle that’s the exact shape as my dad’s.

I was an only child and begged my parents for a sibling—but not just any sibling! I wanted a big brother: older, tall, strong, and blonde-blue-eyed like me. Every birthday and Christmas, I wished for him—even into my teens. When I was 14, my mom finally told me the truth: I had a half-brother from my dad’s previous marriage, living in another country with his mom. A year later, I visited him—and he was exactly how I’d imagined.

Six years ago, I traveled to Thailand with friends and struck up a brief chat with a German guy on a small island. He was sweet, but his friends were leaving, so we just exchanged a few words and said goodbye. Three years later, I couldn’t stop thinking about him—even though we’d only met for minutes.

Then, three years ago, a friend convinced me to join a double date in Peru. I was tired and reluctant, but I went. The “friend” turned out to be that same German guy from Thailand. We got married last year.

At 35, I decided to find my biological mother (I’m adopted) and discovered we live in the same apartment building.

On my daughter’s 14th birthday morning, she woke up saying she dreamed she would meet The One that day. We went to an amusement park where a “Grim Reaper” in the haunted castle scared her so much she screamed and fell backward onto me—causing a domino effect of falls behind us. Even the guy in the costume was startled! We laughed it off, but that night she was disappointed, sure she’d meet her true love.

Twelve years later, at a friend’s wedding, she met a guy, they fell in love, got engaged, and while choosing photos for their wedding video, she screamed. Her fiancé was in one photo at the amusement park—aged 18, dressed as the Grim Reaper. When we told him the story, he remembered the “little girl” who caused the fall.

In Spain, we stayed at a lovely Airbnb where I befriended the kind elderly owner, Maria. She told me she was an orphan and knew she had a twin she’d never met. Three weeks later, on a work trip to Norway, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw Maria sitting in front of me on the plane. I greeted her, but she didn’t recognize me—it was her twin! I gave her Maria’s contact info, and two weeks later, they video-called. We all cried, grateful that fate brought them together through me at age 65.

I was six when my parents decided we had too many toys and donated several bags—including my favorite doll—to charity. Ten years later, I saw that doll again on a shelf at my then-boyfriend’s niece’s house in another city. I recognized it immediately. They only believed me when I showed them the star I’d drawn on its waist—still there when the dress was lifted.

Our teacher was showing photos from last year’s trip to China when a classmate suddenly shouted, “That’s my parents!” The teacher had just taken their picture at Tiananmen Square.

At Christmas 2011, my mom gave me a dress. She left the receipt in the box in case it didn’t fit. She bought it on November 11, at exactly 11:11 AM—so the receipt read: 11/11/2011 11:11.
