Never Do This as a Host — According to Your Guests

You’ve invited several guests, and not everyone knows each other? It’s easy to forget who’s met before in the hustle and bustle, but try to pay attention and introduce them. If you don’t, they’ll probably manage on their own, but the mood will be much more awkward — and you won’t come across as the awesome host you want to be. Better yet, mention a shared interest or two during introductions. That way, even when you’re not around, they’ll have something to chat about.

Everyone knows hosting is tough, and they’ll want to help lighten your load. But if your nerves and busyness are obvious, it can really kill the evening’s vibe. Guests might start feeling like a burden and sit quietly, waiting for the night to end instead of having fun. Even if you’re stressed about making sure everyone enjoys themselves, try to stay relaxed — it’ll get you much further.

The unspoken rule is guests never arrive empty-handed, but life happens. Someone might come straight from work or get stuck in traffic and not want to be late — so don’t expect a gift every time. If you hint at it — even unintentionally — it can ruin the whole evening’s mood and might keep them from visiting again soon. If they ask a few days ahead what to bring and insist on it, help them out with a small suggestion, like a bottle of wine or a dessert.

Guests feel awkward when the host gets up mid-evening to start washing dishes. It’s understandable you don’t want to clean up at midnight, but when you have guests, this is a no-go. A great host waits until everyone leaves before tackling chores. Otherwise, guests might feel like they’re bothering you and that you’re already preparing for their exit — so don’t be surprised if everyone’s putting on their shoes five minutes later.

Few things are more awkward than a group sitting in a living room so quiet you can hear crickets outside. Breaks in conversation happen, especially with guests who don’t know each other well — that’s normal. But be ready: quietly play a playlist to create background noise. This way, silent moments won’t feel so uncomfortable, and someone will likely start chatting about the song playing.

You might not even notice the time, but if you’re on your phone during conversations, guests will think it’s time to leave. Worse, they might believe you’re texting others because they’re boring you. Either way, frequent phone use can cut the visit short. So, keep your phone out of sight during the evening. If you’re expecting an important message, tell your guests upfront — that way, no one will misunderstand.
