1. Explore a Less Crowded Hiking Spot
Budapest is full of stunning sights, but weekends often bring crowds—especially when the weather is perfect for a hike. If you don’t mind the buzz, classic spots like Gellért Hill, Heroes’ Square, or Fisherman’s Bastion are great for celebrating the city’s birthday. Craving some peace? Head to Nagy-Hárs Hill for the Kaán Károly Lookout and Bátori Cave, or visit Makovecz Imre Lookout, Apáthy Rock, or Fox Hill on Kis-Hárs Hill for a quieter escape.
2. Visit a Few Museums
When was the last time you visited a museum in Budapest? Maybe it’s time to check out some! The Museum of Fine Arts, Hungarian National Museum, Terror House Museum, the uniquely fascinating Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker Museum, and the recently opened, ever-expanding Madame Tussauds Budapest all offer captivating exhibitions.

3. Skate and Get into the Holiday Spirit
The City Hall Winter Experience Park and Christmas Market opened on November 15, so on November 17 you can enjoy skating in City Hall Park. Meanwhile, the festive buzz at Deák Ferenc Square is perfect for easing into the holiday mood. Treat yourself to tasty delights and admire the handcrafted treasures that always dazzle visitors.
4. Savor Traditional Goose Dishes
The St. Martin’s Day goose feast is a beloved November tradition, rooted in the old belief that skipping goose on this day means hunger all year. Although St. Martin’s Day falls on November 11, many Budapest restaurants still serve goose delicacies. So if you get hungry between activities, a goose feast is always a delicious choice.
Wondering where to find these tasty treats? The SIMALIBA Downtown Tavern, Vadrózsa Restaurant, and Pasarét Bistro will definitely have goose dishes that day, along with many other spots. Don’t miss the Goose Skin Festival — St. Martin’s National Wine and Goose Festival — running until November 17, with locations across the country, including Budapest, offering new wines and seasonal dishes.

5. Join the Board Games Festival
On November 16-17, the Board Games Festival takes place at Millenáris Buildings B and D in Budapest. It’s your chance to try the latest Hungarian board games, discover new releases from this year’s Essen Spiel—the biggest European board game fair—and grab games at special prices. If you love board games, this event is a can’t-miss!
6. Time for a Snaps Tournament!
Last but not least, the Zsugapest card party happens alongside Budapest’s birthday celebrations (a day earlier, on November 16). With expert helpers on hand, newcomers can try the traditional Hungarian card game snapszer, while seasoned players can compete in tournaments. It’s family-friendly too, with a special kids’ area where animators help children paint cards and learn the game.
Of course, there are plenty more fantastic events throughout the day and weekend in Budapest. Free concerts, the party tram rolling again on November 16, and so much more. If you’re in town, you’re spoiled for choice with amazing things to do, indoors or out, including indulging in mouthwatering treats.
