"She’s my wife, not my mom." - The Most Awkward Class Reunion Stories

The 20-year high school reunion was going smoothly, everyone pleasantly tipsy, when a guy took the stage and grabbed the mic. Back in the day, he was sporty and handsome, the girls adored him; now he’d put on a bit of weight and was balding. We thought he’d say something funny, so everyone stopped dancing and chatting to listen. Clearing his throat, he said: “I’m lonely, I’m going to die alone.”

I wasn’t planning to go to the 25-year reunion, but I saw the Facebook group organizing it. One guy posted the names of classmates who had passed away. I was on the list. Three people liked the post—two of them were Facebook friends.

A few of us were chatting at a table when we noticed a guy was with his mom. We called him over and said how sweet it was he brought his mom to the reunion—he then said that was actually his wife.

As soon as I entered the room, a girl came up and told me her brother had worked at my company for two years—and I had fired him three days ago. Not sure what she hoped to achieve, but I avoided her all night.

My wife was really looking forward to her reunion, talking about a “clique” of five girls she couldn’t wait to see again. One got sick, two couldn’t make it, and another had something come up—so I went with her. We spent the whole night sitting alone at a table. No one came to talk to her, and she didn’t approach anyone either. She cried all the way home.

“Good to see you’re still a stupid b*tch.” Tomi said this to Bea at their 40-year reunion. The room went silent for a moment, but Bea calmly replied, “You never wanted me, and now fat and bald, you’re even less wanted. Everyone brought their partner to the reunion, and I brought my girlfriend. One of the biggest gossip girls excitedly introduced me to her German husband, and I introduced my partner. “Orsi, you mean your business partner?” “No, Dóri, she’s my girlfriend—I’m a lesbian.” Then she whispered to her husband in German, “I always knew something was off about her.” I told him in perfect German he could have chosen a more progressive wife, and we left.

One former classmate added me to the reunion group. I had no intention of going, so I left the group, but she added me again. I left again, she added me again, so I blocked the group invites. The next day, an unknown number called me insisting I had to come—there’s no such thing as not coming. I politely said no. She called three more times; I blocked both numbers and finally hung up. Two days before the reunion, I got an email asking where to send my share of the venue, food, and drinks. I replied, NO, I’M NOT GOING. After the reunion, she sent a two-page email calling me terrible for not showing up and demanding money.

Our hot art teacher from high school was at the party. Sadly, she’d gained weight, looked sloppy, and got drunk very fast. She dragged me to dance, grabbed my butt, whispered she loved me, and tried to kiss me—it was painfully awkward.

The annoying girl spent six months organizing a class reunion that only six people attended. Two years later, I spontaneously posted in the group that I’d be at a bar in the city Friday night. We ended up moving to the park because 70 people showed up. The girl messaged me the next day saying, “You stabbed me in the back and I’m disappointed in you.”
