She didn’t like how her son fixed something at her place, and I saw her hand swing and land a huge slap on him. I went over, grabbed her shoulder, and told her that was the last time she’d hurt her son. If she didn’t change, she’d never see us again and would be alone. I took my husband’s hand, and we left. I thought he’d be mad at me, but with tears in his eyes, he said he’d waited his whole life for someone to stand up for him. We never spoke to her again.

She nagged my husband so much, claiming our child wasn’t his (because "ugly") that we ended up doing a paternity test. I played along but was already preparing for divorce and moving out. Of course, the test proved I was right, and I told my mother-in-law not to worry—she wouldn’t see much of her "ugly" grandchild.
