1. Shrapnel
A friend of mine served as a soldier in several conflict zones, including Afghanistan, where his convoy was attacked and he ended up with a lot of shrapnel in his body. Few know that doctors don’t remove every fragment; some stay inside. Years later, while driving to Lake Balaton with his wife, a truck cut them off. The crash wasn’t severe, but airbags deployed, breaking one of his ribs and pushing a hidden shrapnel piece into his heart—turning the accident fatal.
2. The wrong organ
This isn’t exactly an accident, or maybe it is: my girlfriend’s dad waited years for a organ transplant before his turn came. The surgery was successful, but he died a few months later. It turned out the donor woman—who died in an accident—had cancer, and he passed away from her illness.
3. Truth in the wine
My grandfather was busy with his wine when he went upstairs in the barn. He slipped, fell, and hit his head, losing consciousness. We found him with his upper body submerged in a wine barrel. He drowned in his own wine.

4. I stepped into a puddle
My uncle was working in the garden with the family when suddenly his body stiffened, he twitched a bit, then collapsed. He had stepped into a puddle next to the pantry, where an electric cable was submerged—and he was killed by an electric shock.
5. Uncle Toni’s accident
Uncle Toni was a friend of my dad. Dad used to pick him up for work every morning, and the accident happened right before his eyes. Toni and another man were smoking while leaning against the wall of a ruined house when it suddenly collapsed. They fell into the cellar and died.
6. The animal
I was working in the US when my boss Sofia went on vacation. We talked almost daily, and she sent videos of the beautiful national park where she camped with her husband. Then I couldn’t reach her for days and thought they were somewhere without cell signal. Later, I learned Sofia was attacked by a bison and died in the hospital from her injuries. In our last chat, she complained about how many careless people ignore the dangers of wildlife, jogging with headphones or getting too close to bisons.

7. Tangled up
One of my uncle’s employees was supervising as a thick wire rope was wound onto a huge drum. Though forbidden, he kept his hand on the cable bundle to help guide it. A frayed section caught his glove, the wire pulled him in and wrapped him around the drum. He died before the paramedics arrived.
8. The flowerpot
We were at my mom’s place in summer with half the family. I was walking inside with my aunt to bring out lunch when I noticed she wasn’t responding. I turned and saw her lying motionless in the garden bed—she was dead. At first, we thought her heart stopped, but it turned out a flowerpot fell from the roof and killed her instantly.

9. Out of the frying pan into the fire
A little girl from the village was very afraid of bees. When a beehive was accidentally kicked over while playing by the lake, she screamed and ran into the water. She couldn’t swim and drowned before anyone could rescue her.
10. The forklift
A young colleague of mine was always eager and came in early. He was alone in the warehouse when he accidentally left the forklift running and went to stack pallets. He didn’t notice the machine slowly moving behind him and got impaled. If he had arrived later, someone would have been there to save him, but alone, he bled out before the next coworker came in.
