Meet the New Harry Potter
The first official behind-the-scenes photo has dropped: Dominic McLaughlin appears fully in costume as Harry Potter, holding a film clapperboard. It’s a true deja vu moment. Harry’s iconic messy black hair and signature glasses look like they’ve stepped right out of the movies and into the series.
Nick Frost also appears as Rubeus Hagrid, and his look eerily recalls Robbie Coltrane’s iconic portrayal. For many, this is comforting; for others, it’s exactly the problem.
"HBO’s Harry Potter series aims to stay true to the books. The films have always held a special place in my heart, but I felt the story they told was much more surface-level compared to the deeper world of the novels."
New Cast, New Opportunities — Yet Many Things Stay Familiar?
The new cast is coming together. Rory Wilmot will play young Neville Longbottom, while Amos Kitson debuts as Dudley Dursley. Familiar faces from the older generation include Louise Brealey, known from Sherlock, as Professor Rolanda Hooch, and Anton Lesser (from Endeavour and Game of Thrones) as Garrick Ollivander.
How Bold Will HBO Be?
While the promise of a faithful adaptation is welcome news, some fans feel the visuals so far stick too closely to the films — missing the chance to rethink and refresh the story.
"Harry’s dark, messy hair and Hagrid’s bushy beard are exactly as described in the books — but not every detail needed to be carried over from the films. For example, the house-colored ties don’t appear in the novels. Those could have been updated."
Many also criticize that the famous lightning-shaped scar is again just a simple painted zigzag. A unique magical "lightning mark," like a Lichtenberg figure, could have been much more exciting and distinctive.
Beyond the Wizarding World: Social Debates and Creative Conflicts Emerge
The series’ background is shadowed not only by creative questions but also social debates. Author J.K. Rowling has made several controversial statements about the transgender community in recent years. In a 2024 post, she wrote:
"There are no trans children" — and she opposed the idea that "someone can be born in the wrong body."
In May 2025, Rowling founded the JK Rowling Women’s Fund, a foundation that legally defends women’s sex-based rights. Alongside critical voices, some actors publicly distanced themselves from Rowling’s views — Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint all sent supportive messages to the trans community. Others, like Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, and Jim Broadbent, have defended the author.
The Big Question: Will There Be New Magic Behind the Old Story?
Each season of the Harry Potter series will be based on one of the novels, starting with the first, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Staying true to the original material is admirable, but creative freedom is vital — especially for a world so beloved by many.
HBO faces a big challenge: finding the balance between nostalgia and innovation, recreating the magic in a way that feels fresh yet familiar.
Are you excited to see if this new magic will work?
