Sleep is one of the most intimate parts of our lives: we completely let our guard down and unconsciously develop habits that reveal a lot about us. Experts say it’s no coincidence which side of the bed we prefer. Our choice often connects to our personality and can even influence our daily lives. A British mattress brand, Premier Inn, surveyed over 3,000 people about their sleep habits, and the results were surprising: those who sleep on the right side of the bed generally saw themselves as more optimistic, while left-side sleepers tended to be more pessimistic but described themselves as calmer and more composed. Let’s see what your choice says about you!
You Sleep on the Right Side
If you naturally choose the right side of the bed, you’re likely an active, energetic person who likes to keep things under control. People like you are often driven by career and social status, aren’t afraid to make decisions, and willingly take responsibility for others.
A 2010 UK survey found that over half of right-side sleepers described themselves as more confident and decisive than their left-side counterparts.
This doesn’t mean you never doubt yourself, but you generally like to take initiative and are often the first to act in a situation.
Interestingly, psychologists have noticed that right-side sleepers often fit the "leader" type: those who enjoy taking charge, whether at work or in family life. In your relationships, this might show up as organizing outings, deciding vacation spots, or choosing what’s for dinner. While this can sometimes seem stubborn, many appreciate the decisiveness and security you bring.
You Sleep on the Left Side
Those who prefer the left side tend to have a very different personality pattern. If this is your spot, you’re likely calmer and more balanced. According to the Premier Inn study, left-side sleepers more often saw themselves as composed, empathetic, and family-oriented. Many felt they managed stress better and worried less in daily life.
Psychologists say left-side sleepers often feel stronger bonds with others—whether in romantic relationships, friendships, or family—and tend to avoid conflict, seeking peaceful solutions.
This doesn’t mean they’re weak or indecisive, but rather that they can see life from a broader perspective. In relationships, you’re the listener, the one who seeks balance, often putting others’ needs before your own to keep harmony.
Interestingly, many left-side sleepers also leaned toward left-wing political views in the British study. While not universal, it hints at deeper connections behind our sleep side choices.
You Sleep in the Middle Even When Sharing the Bed
One of the most intriguing groups are those who choose the middle of the bed even when sharing it. This habit often signals a strong desire to be central in life and relationships. If this sounds like you, you probably enjoy being the center of attention and value having others revolve around you.
Psychologists note that such people often have strong self-confidence but may sometimes lean toward selfishness.
Interestingly, most middle sleepers—according to an American survey—identify as extroverts. They love social settings, actively seek community experiences, and often bring energy to groups. However, in relationships, they might struggle to adapt to their partner’s needs. Always taking the middle spot could also mean a fear of vulnerability, instinctively seeking safety there.
It might also simply be about comfort: the mattress often feels firmer in the middle, making that position cozier. For your partner, this can sometimes feel like you’re crowding their space. But if you communicate openly and find solutions together, this habit becomes a charming quirk that’s part of your personality.
