What once annoyed me now inspires me. Early darkness used to mean gloom and rush—like the day was slipping right through my fingers. But today, with a little mindfulness and small habits, winter has become one of my favorite seasons.
The rhythm of short days no longer bothers me; it actually helps me live, work, and recharge better. Here’s how my relationship with winter changed—and how you can find its magic too!
Morning Light – A Fresh Take on Waking Up Early
I’m not naturally a morning person—early rising used to feel like a necessary evil. But something shifted during winter months. I noticed that waking up a bit earlier and letting in the sunlight starts my day with calm. I take my time making a delicious breakfast, brew a coffee, and let the light slowly fill the room.

Then comes work: while it’s still light, I truly soar. I’m more energetic, creative, quick with ideas, and sharply focused. It feels like the limited daylight is more precious, so I appreciate it even more.
Making the Most of Daylight Hours
I realized I really enjoy short days when I don’t let them slip away. Whenever I can, I shape my days to get outside while it’s still light—whether for a quick walk or a slightly longer outing.
If I still have work left, I dive into tasks during the early evening hours.
This mindset actually gives me freedom: I don’t feel tied to my desk all day, yet I’m more productive.
Winter Hikes: The Season’s Most Beautiful Gifts
In winter, nature shows a different face, and I’ve grown to love this quiet, crystalline vibe. When we can, we head out—even if it’s just a stroll in a nearby park or revisiting the stunning parts of the Kőszeg Mountains, just half an hour away.
The short days motivate me to start early and reach my favorite spots while it’s still light. A walk in the fresh air followed by a tasty meal or a steaming matcha latte has become one of my favorite winter rituals.
The Cozy Magic of Dark Hours—Enhanced by Light Parks
While my days are busier during daylight, the evenings invite slowing down. In recent years, winter nights gained a special new dimension: illuminated Christmas markets and beautiful light parks popping up everywhere.
Because of this, I sometimes actually look forward to nightfall. Light installations, tunnels, sculptures, and themed light trails create a magical atmosphere impossible to experience during the day. A stroll in the cold, fresh air surrounded by thousands of colorful lights is true grown-up magic.

And when we don’t go out, cozying up at home has its own charm: binge-watching series, enjoying tasty treats, cooking, or a fragrant hot bath—all perfect evening plans in the dark.
The Secret: Let Nature Lead the Way
Now I see that short days become truly lovable when we stop fighting them. Accepting a different rhythm and consciously shaping our days to find beauty in both light and dark makes all the difference.
Winter isn’t the enemy, it’s an opportunity. When we let it guide us at its own pace, it holds surprising joy and magic.
