First Things First: What Counts as a Psychopath?
If your boss dumped paperwork on you again, or you had a fight with your cousin, neither deserves the label "psychopath" just because you feel uneasy or have conflicts. And on the flip side, it’s not true that all people with psychopathy are criminals. Robert Hare, a leading expert, puts it like this:
“A social predator who deliberately uses charm and manipulation to get what they want. A psychopath has no conscience and no feelings for others. They take whatever they want without a shred of guilt or remorse.”
Sign #1 – Complete Lack of Empathy
This might be the most important sign. It usually doesn’t mean they just don’t care about others’ feelings—it means they can’t recognize those feelings at all.
That’s why they remain untouched by the world’s troubles. This lack of empathy fuels their dangerous tendencies, allowing them to do harm without understanding the consequences. The results can range from exploiting elderly parents to serial killings and everything in between.
Sign #2 – Deception and Manipulation
Without empathy, psychopaths see others as objects to use for their own gain. Their go-to tools are lying and playing roles. Psychiatrist Harvey Cleckley described this role-playing as “a mask of sanity.” Not every psychopath lies smoothly—some get caught often and just spin new stories to wiggle out.
Sign #3 – Shallow Emotions
Psychopaths don’t just live without empathy; their emotions themselves are underdeveloped. They rarely feel much, and when they do, it’s superficial. Psychiatrists call these “proto-emotions”—basic reactions to needs. They often seem cold and stiff, so they carefully watch others to learn how they’re “supposed” to feel and copy that.

Sign #4 – Superficial Charm
Psychopaths can seem charming and captivating—the kind of people who can talk their way into anything. Many appear as confident dominant personalities and may even hold leadership roles. (History is full of psychopathic dictators, after all.)
This charm can be very effective early in relationships. Unfortunately, it’s why many women fall for psychopathic men…
Sign #5 – Over-the-Top Self-Esteem
Psychopaths usually have an inflated sense of self, believing they’re better than others. This justifies their manipulation and deception. Their self-image often leads to chasing money and collecting status symbols, topped off with constant bragging. They tend to exaggerate their achievements and can talk about them for hours.
Sign #6 – Fear of Boredom
Psychopaths can’t stand boredom. They need an incredible amount of excitement and stimulation, partly because feelings—including fear—are missing from their lives. This often shows up as risk-taking and breaking the law. They’re also more prone to addictions for this reason. If you recognize these signs in someone, don’t try to “save” or “fix” them alone! They need serious professional help.
