I won’t say these songs are still among my favorites on Spotify, but whenever I hear them, I’m instantly transported back to being a teenager singing with my friends in the dorm room. If you’re in the mood for a little nostalgia, take a look at the songs I’ve handpicked to bring back memories—but don’t blame me if you end up wanting to buy a pair of knee-high Converse right away!
t.A.T.u. – All The Things She Said (2002)
Who doesn’t remember this one? It was scandalous, provocative, and incredibly catchy all at once. The music video—with rain, bars, and its then-shocking theme—captured a true generational moment. Looking back as an adult, the sexualization of the lesbian theme, especially given the girls’ age, is definitely problematic—but at 14, we sang along passionately with Julia, “Mother, lukiny at me!”
Wheatus – Teenage Dirtbag
Technically a bit older, but this was still a hit during my high school years as the theme song of the movie Loser. And who doesn’t know the line “I’m just a teenage dirtbag, baby…” by heart? This was the anthem for high school outsiders, the quirky ones, the music lovers. I always think of the buzz in the cafeteria and secretly writing lyrics in notebooks during class.
Linkin Park – In The End
If there was a song that captured our anger, anxiety, and the heart-wrenching drama of teenage life, this was it. Chester Bennington’s voice combined with Mike Shinoda’s rap made a duo you never got tired of. Whether you were a rocker, rapper, skater, or clubber, you definitely knew this song by heart.
Good Charlotte – Lifestyles of the Rich and the Famous
This song was the suburban version of punk rebellion, and even us well-behaved, good-student girls allowed ourselves to vibe with it. My friends were all about the twins Joel and Benji Madden, while I was crushing on the always sad-eyed guitarist Billy, who looked like a Tim Burton character walking in the real world.
Blink-182 – The Rock Show
This was the era when everyone wore skate shoes, and even if you couldn’t skateboard, blasting Blink-182 made you feel like part of that subculture. The Rock Show gave off all the feels of falling in love, hanging out with friends, and living in the moment—and honestly, it still does.
Green Day – American Idiot
In the mid-2000s, no teenager didn’t shout at the top of their lungs, “Don’t wanna be an American idiot!” Back then, not everyone caught the political message, but the energy, the raw power, and punk spirit swept everyone away.
Kispál és a Borz – Ha az életben
We can’t skip the Hungarian scene either. Kispál was always a bit different: poetic lyrics, melancholic moods, yet catchy tunes. Ha az életben was many of our “high school love song,” secretly played from copied CDs while sighing deeply in class. That was me too—without it, who knows if I’d have gotten into the humanities faculty later, where being a Kispál fan was an unspoken requirement.
Avril Lavigne – Complicated
Speaking of punk rebellion, Avril was a true icon for us back then. A girl who skated coolly, wore smudged eyeliner and a tie? Of course, we copied her style! Complicated showed up in every teenage girl’s diary in some form: the lyrics, the attitude, the whole “I’m not like the others” vibe really hit home for our teenage souls.
The Killers – Mr. Brightside
Few songs can spark as much euphoria as this one. Mr. Brightside is the track I can still sing with the same dramatic flair I had at 15, no matter when I hear it.
The Rasmus – In the Shadows
Dark, cool, and coming all the way from the far north. If you leaned toward a darker vibe, Finnish bands were a must. Lauri Ylönen singing in his black feathered coat and the melancholic melodies swept through music channels with such force that you couldn’t avoid them. Who-o-o-ó!
