Though the door is said to open only on Palm Sunday during the priest’s mass, autumn is still a great time to try your luck uncovering these riches. Rumor has it the secret passage lies beneath a hazel bush.

Királyrét Forest is also just a short trip from Budapest. Beyond its stunning views and colorful leaves, it’s home to Hungary’s third busiest forest railway, the charming little train on line 317. Since spring 2013, a solar-powered train runs here, collecting enough energy from rooftop panels to chug up to the destination even on cloudy days. This 30-minute ride blends nature and modern tech, and you only need to travel as far as Kismaros. From there, the train takes you to Királyerdő, where a great hike can round off your day.
