With some luck, you might spot rare species like falcons, marsh harriers, or herons, alongside deer, roe deer, and foxes. Located near the southern border, it’s perfect for hiking. If you’re with kids or prefer less walking, the forest railway offers an unforgettable experience.

Near Eger, in the Bükk Mountains, the Szalajka Valley Forest is one of Hungary’s best hiking spots. Here, you’ll find everything a forest adventure promises: colorful leaves, stunning mountain views, and the dazzling Veil Waterfall. Nearby Szilvásvárad offers even more: an ancient cave to explore, a wildlife park with mouflons and fallow deer, and a forest railway that excites both kids and adults alike. After your hike, treat yourself to freshly caught trout from the Szalajka stream, grilled to perfection.

Kámor is a mountain whose name sounds mysterious to Hungarian ears. Besides offering stunning views connected to the Börzsöny range, it’s wrapped in legends, making it a favorite spot for both kids and adults. You can even join organized treasure hunts here. One legend tells of a secret door at the summit leading to spacious chambers filled with treasures. Though the door is said to open only on Palm Sunday during the priest’s mass, autumn is still a great time to try your luck uncovering these riches. Rumor has it the secret passage lies beneath a hazel bush.

Királyrét Forest is also just a short trip from Budapest. Beyond its stunning views and colorful leaves, it’s home to Hungary’s third busiest forest railway, the charming little train on line 317. Since spring 2013, a solar-powered train runs here, collecting enough energy from rooftop panels to chug up to the destination even on cloudy days. This 30-minute ride blends nature and modern tech, and you only need to travel as far as Kismaros. From there, the train takes you to Királyerdő, where a great hike can round off your day.
