Beyond the Transfăgărășan: 3 breathtaking scenic drives in Europe you need to do once in your life — Leisure

When people talk about Europe's most spectacular roads, the Transfăgărășan in Romania almost always comes up first. And for good reason — it's extraordinary. But the continent has no shortage of rivals. There are routes out there that are just as dramatic, just as unforgettable, and far less crowded. Here are three scenic drives in Europe that belong on every road tripper's bucket list.

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road, Austria

Cutting through the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road (Großglockner Hochalpenstraße) is Austria's most iconic mountain drive — and one of the most breathtaking in all of Europe. It winds its way toward Grossglockner, the country's highest peak, offering a journey that evolves with every kilometre.

The drive begins gently, rolling through charming alpine villages and lush green valleys. But as the road climbs, the scenery transforms dramatically. Dense forests give way to bare rock faces and glacier-capped summits, and every hairpin bend opens up a new, wider view of the Alps. It never gets old.

One of the most memorable stops is the Pasterze Glacier viewpoint, where you can stand and watch one of Europe's largest glaciers slowly moving below you. There are several dedicated panorama stops along the route — places where you're meant to pull over, get out, and simply breathe it all in.

For driving enthusiasts, the road itself is part of the thrill. The tight switchbacks and technical bends make it genuinely engaging behind the wheel, with the reward of a stunning new vista waiting around every corner. And when you're ready to rest, the local mountain huts serve up hearty alpine food — think steamed dumplings and aged mountain cheeses — that make the experience feel complete.

The Amalfi Coast Road, Italy

Few drives in the world are as cinematic as the Amalfi Coast. Hugging the cliffs of southern Italy between Sorrento and Salerno, this narrow, winding road is equal parts terrifying and magnificent — and absolutely worth every white-knuckle moment.

The route passes through some of Italy's most beautiful villages: Positano with its tumbling pastel houses, and Ravello perched high above the sea. Below, the Tyrrhenian Sea stretches out in every shade of blue imaginable. The combination of dramatic coastline, fragrant lemon groves, and that unmistakable Italian dolce vita atmosphere is intoxicating.

The road is famously narrow — two cars passing each other can feel like a negotiation — but that only adds to the sense of adventure. Take your time, stop often, and don't rush what is genuinely one of the most beautiful stretches of road on Earth.

And the food? The Amalfi Coast delivers there too. Fresh seafood, handmade pasta, and the world-famous Limoncello made from locally grown lemons are all part of the experience. A meal with a sea view here is something you won't forget.

Trollstigen, Norway

If dramatic Nordic landscapes are your thing, Trollstigen — literally "the Troll's Ladder" — is non-negotiable. This legendary Norwegian mountain road is a series of eleven tight hairpin turns carved into a near-vertical cliff face, and it is every bit as spectacular as it sounds.

The undisputed highlight is the Stigfossen waterfall, which plunges 320 metres alongside the road in a roaring cascade of white water. It's the kind of sight that stops you mid-sentence. The surrounding peaks and deep valleys frame the scene perfectly, showcasing Scandinavian nature at its most raw and powerful.

Once you've conquered the road itself, the nearby Geirangerfjord is an absolute must. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of Norway's most celebrated natural wonders, and the hiking trails around it let you explore hidden corners of the landscape that most visitors never reach.

Round off the experience with some local food. Norwegian salmon, wild berry desserts, and the clean simplicity of Nordic cuisine are a perfect match for the landscape around you.

Europe's roads are waiting

These three routes prove that Europe's most remarkable experiences aren't always found in museums or city squares. Sometimes the journey itself is the destination. Nature and culture meet on these roads in a way that no guided tour can replicate. So take the wheel, leave the familiar routes behind, and go find the continent's hidden masterpieces — one bend at a time.
