"He Booked Us a Weekend Away" — 3 First Dates That Went Completely Off the Rails — Relationship

A first date is always slightly unsteady ground. Everyone tries to show their best side, and underneath it all sits the same quiet question: how much of this is real, how much is performance, and whether any of it will actually go anywhere.

But every so often, the evening doesn't just wobble — it veers somewhere no one could have predicted.

Here are three real stories from first dates where the people involved could barely believe what was happening right in front of them.

"I thought he was joking when he said he'd already booked a weekend for us"

"I met P. on a dating app," says Anna, 31. "The first conversation was completely normal — better than normal, actually. We messaged for a few days, and then he asked if I'd like to meet up.

"The date was at a café, and everything started off fine. Then, after the second coffee, he pulled out his phone and said he wanted to show me something. I assumed it was a travel photo or something like that.

"Instead, it was a hotel booking. For a whole weekend, at a spa resort. He looked at me and said, 'I figured we're getting along so well anyway, so I booked it for the two of us.'

"At first I laughed. I thought maybe he had an odd sense of humor. But he wasn't laughing. I sat there trying to act like this was completely normal, while in my head I was already looking for the exit. I told him it was way too fast for me. He just replied: 'But I've already made the decision for you.' That's where the date ended."

"He told me he hadn't come alone"

"We met on a dating app and had our first date at a bar," says Gábor, 28. "The conversation was really easy, no awkwardness at all. But once we sat down, I noticed someone by the counter glancing over at us every now and then.

"So I asked if it was someone he knew. He said, 'No, he's just watching.' I laughed, because I assumed it was some kind of joke."

Sometimes the smallest detail on a date is the one worth paying attention to — like these early signals we tend to brush off.

"A few minutes later, the guy from the counter walked over and sat down next to us. My date introduced him: 'This is my partner.' For a second I genuinely didn't understand what he meant.

"It turned out he wasn't there for a date at all — his partner enjoys watching other men flirt with him. I told him I'm the last person who'd judge anyone for their kinks, but it might have been worth asking me first whether I was on board, because honestly, I'd rather not have wasted my time on it. I got up, left, and deleted the app for a good few months."

"This isn't even a date"

"A colleague invited me out to dinner," says Réka, 33. "I was genuinely happy about it, because we'd gotten along well for ages, and I thought we were finally about to go on a proper date.

"The evening was really lovely. We laughed a lot, everything felt completely natural. Then, over dessert, he suddenly said: 'Just so it's clear, by the way — this isn't a date.'

"He said it was just dinner to him, because 'you need a bit of a break from work.' I felt the whole situation shift in an instant. What I had believed was a date retroactively became just an ordinary dinner.

"The strangest part was that he carried on the conversation exactly the same way afterward, as if nothing had happened. But I couldn't go back to the version where it was just a friendly evening."

Why do first dates sometimes go so unexpectedly wrong?

Because both people usually walk in with completely different expectations. As these stories show, one person can think it's a promising romance while the other has an entirely different plan in mind.

What should you do if a date suddenly makes you uncomfortable?

Trust that feeling and act on it. In each of these stories, the person who felt something was off chose to leave — and that clarity is usually the healthiest response.

Is it normal to feel confused when a date takes a strange turn?

Completely. A first date is uncertain ground to begin with, so it's natural to feel thrown when the evening heads somewhere you never imagined.
