What Exactly Is Bubble Tea?
If we’re talking about milk tea, bubble tea is literally milk tea with tapioca pearls added. This drink originally comes from Taiwan but has become a global favorite. It’s sweet and creamy, and those chewy tapioca pearls make it extra special and lovable. You can enjoy it hot or cold, though most people prefer it as a refreshing cold treat.
Milk tea is incredibly versatile. You can make it fruity (think mango), floral (like rose or chamomile), or cozy and warming (caramel or pumpkin spice). The classic version is simply made with brown sugar. There’s so much variety, you’re sure to find a version you love.

How Can You Make It?
Milk tea is amazing with or without tapioca pearls. So if you want to try it right now but don’t have tapioca pearls at home, don’t let that stop you! This recipe makes a large batch of heavenly milk tea, but feel free to multiply it to treat your whole family or friends. And once you taste it, don’t hesitate to experiment with extra flavors.
Ingredients:
For the milk tea:
- ½ cup water
- 2 black tea bags
- ½ cup whole milk
- ice cubes (for the cold version)
- 2 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk
For the brown sugar syrup:
- ¾ cup water
- 3 tablespoons brown sugar
- ¼ cup tapioca pearls
Preparation:
- First, boil water for the tea. Pour ½ cup of boiling water into a mug with the tea bags (using two bags ensures a strong brew), then let it steep for 5 minutes.
- Remove the tea bags, set the mug aside, and let the tea cool completely.
- Make the brown sugar syrup: combine brown sugar and water in a pan, then heat over medium heat, stirring often until the sugar dissolves.
- Bring the syrup to a boil, then add the tapioca pearls if using, and reduce the heat.
- Simmer the syrup for 10-15 minutes until it thickens and the tapioca pearls are cooked through, then let it cool slightly.
- Pour the brown sugar syrup with tapioca pearls into a glass.
- Add ice to taste, then pour in the black tea, whole milk, and sweetened condensed milk.
- Gently stir with a spoon, and your sweet, creamy milk tea is ready to enjoy!
Bonus tip: If you’re lactose intolerant, vegan, or just avoiding dairy, simply swap both milks for an unsweetened plant-based alternative.
