How to Pack for a Trip When You’re Only Taking Carry-On Luggage — Leisure
In this article

A few years ago, we started flying abroad again. Our daughter is now old enough that traveling by plane isn’t a hassle for her, and we recently realized that the cost of one night at our favorite wellness hotel at home was about the same as two plane tickets to Italy during peak season.

Of course, prices stay friendly only if you avoid checking in 25 kg (55 lbs) suitcases — but for 3–5 nights, we easily fit everything in backpacks, and with one extra shared carry-on, the three of us travel comfortably.

Why is traveling with just carry-on luggage worth it?

First: you save time. No waiting in line at check-in or pacing by the baggage carousel hoping your bag shows up (a true blessing when your flight’s delayed or you arrive exhausted early in the morning). Plus, you can be sure your bag won’t get lost during connections.

Second: you save a lot of money. Often, baggage fees cost more than the plane ticket itself, so traveling light is a smart way to fit in an extra trip each year.

Once you experience the freedom of packing light and stop worrying about "just in case," you won’t want to travel any other way!

The most important thing: have a great bag

To truly enjoy traveling with carry-on only, stuffing a few things into any random backpack won’t cut it. The key is thoughtful, practical packing — and a good bag makes all the difference. Choose one that’s lightweight, easy to organize, has multiple compartments, and feels comfortable even if you carry it for a while.

It also matters if your bag meets the size and weight limits of your airline. Nothing’s more frustrating than finding out at the gate you have to pay extra or check your bag.

We avoid these headaches by traveling with soft-sided bags. While hard-shell cases might seem practical, they often cause trouble for other travelers — they don’t give even half a centimeter of wiggle room, and that half centimeter can make all the difference.

Traveling with carry-on luggage

Once you have the right bag, it’s time to plan!

This is where a minimalist mindset shines: the goal isn’t to prepare for every possible scenario, but to pack versatile pieces that serve multiple purposes. For example, a comfortable, neutral-colored pair of pants works just as well for a daytime stroll as for an evening dinner. The same goes for a well-chosen blouse that layers nicely over a tee or under a light cardigan for cooler nights.

I always lay out my chosen items on the bed to see if they coordinate — basically packing like building a capsule wardrobe. Only tops that match all pants and skirts make the cut.

Tip: Try rolling your clothes instead of folding!

When traveling with just carry-on, planning ahead is crucial: check the weather, think about your activities, and pack only what you’ll definitely wear! If you tend to overpack, ask yourself: “Would I want to wear this for a whole day?” or “Does this really fit the planned activities?” If not, or if you don’t feel comfortable, leave it at home!

Tip: Extra pouches and organizers

Grab some vacuum bags or packing cubes—they save space and keep your bag organized without adding weight. Use one pouch for underwear, another for tops—no more digging through your whole bag to find something.

Shoes take up a lot of space, so choose wisely. Pick a comfortable, well-broken-in pair you’d happily wear on vacation—remember, what’s on your feet doesn’t count toward your luggage allowance. Add a pair of sandals or flip-flops for the beach or pool. Waterproof rubber ones are great for showers or public baths.

And here’s a mindset that helps you pack lighter: almost everything can be replaced! If you forget your flip-flops, run out of toothpaste, or can’t bring your metal nail file, you can usually buy replacements on the go—and even then, you’ll likely spend less than paying checked baggage fees.

Packing carry-on luggage

Smart packing matters for toiletries, too

Most drugstores sell travel-sized bottles (you know, 100 ml max), but it’s even better to refill your favorite products at home. Solid cosmetics or small jars for face cream, pump bottles for shampoo or lotion let you bring just what you need.

Tip: Keep them in a clear, sealable pouch separate from your bag for easy access at security—and no worries if one leaks.

Packing list for a 4-day trip with carry-on only

Clothes

  • 1 comfortable travel outfit (wear on the plane)
  • 2 extra tops (mix and match with bottoms)
  • 1–2 bottoms (pants, skirt—depending on weather and style)

  • 1 sweater or cardigan (for layering and cooler evenings)
  • 1 set of pajamas or sleepwear
  • 4 changes of underwear
  • 4 pairs of socks
  • 1 comfortable pair of shoes (wear on the trip)
  • 1 extra pair of sandals or flip-flops (for the beach or pool)
  • Swimsuit
  • Beach towel (lightweight, microfiber)

Toiletries and cosmetics (under 100 ml, in a clear pouch)

  • Toothbrush, toothpaste
  • Deodorant
  • Mini shower gel, shampoo, conditioner
  • Face cream, body lotion
  • Sunscreen
  • Comb or hairbrush
  • Makeup (just the essentials)
  • Feminine hygiene products (if needed)
  • Medications (regular meds, pain relievers, charcoal tablets)
  • Hair ties
  • Plastic nail file
  • Perfume sample

Keep these handy

  • Passport or ID
  • Plane tickets, reservations (printed or on your phone)
  • Phone charger
  • Empty water bottle (fill after security)

Other handy items

  • Sunglasses
  • Headphones
  • E-reader or book
  • Small crossbody or belt bag for sightseeing
  • Clothing bags or vacuum bags for organizing

This list is more than enough for a comfortable, light 4-day trip — with room left in your bag for a little souvenir.

Once you catch the bug for how much easier and freeing it is to travel with just carry-on luggage, you’ll never want to go back to overpacked suitcases! Less really is more: more freedom and more time for what you originally set out to do!
