Those cosmetic products endorsed or launched by some celebrity. Usually, they’re no better than what you can buy at regular prices in drugstores or pharmacies, but they’re insanely expensive because a celebrity’s name is attached.

For example, an actress once recommended an eye cream costing hundreds of dollars, but it contained no better ingredients than a simple, affordable face cream. I once gave in when my favorite singer promoted a mascara. It cost six times more than my usual brand and was terrible. Never falling for that again.

I always dreamed of having a fireplace—it looked so cozy in movies. When I built my house, the fireplace became the living room’s centerpiece, and I even liked it the first winter. But then I got lazy about chopping wood, my wife didn’t like it because it soothed the walls, so it lost its charm with the family. We basically use it only three months a year, which means we haven’t really used it for years because we put the TV in front of it.

A lot of money and energy went into my education, yet I couldn’t find a job in my field. It would have been way more useful to complete a shorter course or learn a practical trade.

So-called modern art—when someone pays a fortune for indistinct paint blobs on canvas—which my wife decorates the house with. I find it a bit pretentious, especially when she explains how deeply she understands the "art."

The most expensive thing I splurged on and regretted was my wedding. We poured a ton of money into it—which put pressure on us to make everything perfect—so we were tense the whole time and couldn’t really enjoy it. I was stressed out, and the groom got drunk to loosen up.

Our friends, on the other hand, held their wedding at their aunt’s small vacation home. The bride wore a beautiful dress that cost under 15 USD, and we made the bouquet from wildflowers found in the fields. Guests camped, we cooked outdoors, and everyone had a blast. They wisely spent the big money on their honeymoon instead.

Short-term rentals are getting as expensive as hotels, plus you have to clean up after yourself. We recently traveled to Barcelona and found a nice apartment, but I was disappointed by the prices—especially since a hotel would have cost about the same. Sure, the hotel room was smaller, but it included breakfast and daily housekeeping.

Several overbred purebred dogs. They often come with a bunch of health problems that cause suffering for both the dogs and their owners. Now, I only adopt sweet mixed-breed dogs from shelters: they’re beautiful, smart, unique, and have far fewer issues.

Indoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna. My uncle spent a fortune on these. They used them occasionally for a few years, then only when we visited or guests came who found it novel. For years now, no one uses the wellness area—I can’t even remember the last time we went down there.
