Monday is tough no matter what, and many of us end up procrastinating or skipping tasks, which only makes things worse. It’s way smarter to spend a few minutes on Friday or at the latest Sunday planning what’s ahead. Personally, I have to write everything down or I’ll forget something important. I try to keep Monday lighter on tasks but put extra effort into my work. I focus on must-dos and postpone what can wait—this way, from Tuesday on, my week feels calmer because I know only manageable tasks are waiting. To make this happen, I sometimes work ahead or prepare things like laundry and lunch on Sunday. It’s not always easy to do this on Friday or over the weekend, but knowing I’m easing Monday’s load makes it totally worth it!

For many, Monday morning feels like a mad rush, and if you’re in that boat, you probably dread the new workday. Try pushing your toughest tasks a bit later and start with the easier ones. Schedule urgent tasks for the afternoon, and don’t overload your day with extras like hair appointments, shopping, or even workouts. While these can be relaxing, they still take time and might leave you feeling overwhelmed. That pressure can weigh on you all day and make Monday feel even more stressful. Instead, save fun, low-key activities like watching a show, reading, or walking your dog for late afternoon or evening. The key is to keep things optional and flexible so you can change your mind if you want.

I often give in to extra sleep on weekends since I can’t really relax otherwise. But research suggests that napping too long can do more harm than good—especially if you oversleep. A short nap of 30 to 60 minutes is ideal to avoid messing with your body clock. Longer naps can make it harder to fall asleep at night and increase the chance of waking up during the night, which only adds to Monday’s challenges. So, a little post-lunch rest is great, but sleeping through half the afternoon won’t make your week easier. In fact, it might do the opposite!

Watching my little girl up close has shown me how important routines are in life, even if as adults we have different reasons for sticking to habits. What’s clear is that routines quietly help us get back on track at the start of the week. When you do something out of habit, you don’t have to think about it, so even while staying active, you give yourself a little mental break. Don’t try a new breakfast recipe Monday morning, and don’t schedule your first morning jog then either. Instead, stick to your usual weekday morning habits to make Monday feel less intimidating and tiring.
