What’s something that if you said out loud, everyone would jump on you? We asked the internet what unpopular opinions are actually sad truths.

Mental Health

Your mental illness is not your personality. Many people use their diagnosis as an excuse for all their flaws, but you can’t just wash your hands of responsibility because you have a label like bipolar, anxious, borderline, or depressed.

Hidden Agendas

There are moms who are obsessed with convincing you that raising kids is the most wonderful thing in the world and a woman’s life is meaningless without it. Then there are men who remind you that your biological clock is ticking and you’ll run out of time. I’m convinced they don’t have my best interests at heart—they just want me to conform and fall in line. They don’t want me to have a better life than them. I’m sure of it, because anyone happily raising kids in a healthy family wouldn’t be so obsessed with pushing this on you.

Self-Check on Men and Women

Men often don’t see their wives as equal partners—people who mutually support each other—but rather as housekeepers they occasionally masturbate into. And if you’re a woman sleeping around with many men, hopping from one to another, that’s not "girl power," it’s a serious lack of self-confidence.

The Diagnosis

As a psychologist, I doubt there really are so many kids with attention disorders, hyperactivity, or autism today. It feels like parents and teachers often just slap a diagnosis on kids instead of truly engaging with them.

Troublemakers

Modern permissive parenting creates little tyrants. Many kids today are unbearably difficult, and parents really do need to set boundaries. Don’t worry, a gentle spanking now and then won’t cause emotional damage. And one more thing: not everyone should feel pressured to have children…

The Past

Having a rough childhood or being hurt by others doesn’t give you the right to hurt others. Past wounds aren’t an excuse for bad behavior because as adults, we’re responsible for our actions.

Perspectives

Just because someone belongs to a marginalized group doesn’t mean they have a flawless character. I’ve worked at an international company for years, and I can say that someone from a minority can still be racist. I also know several gay men who openly dislike women.

The State of Education

Teachers earn so little because education was originally considered women’s work.

Haha

Friends was never especially funny or outstanding. My sister’s baby is ugly. Men are physically stronger than women. Except for kidnappers, no one cares about the “baby on board” sticker on your car.

Deadly Positivity

No matter the "body positivity" movement, obesity will never be sexy or healthy. This truth is hard to say, even though many body activists have died young. Cat Pausé, a "fat studies" researcher, was 42; Efecan Kültür, a "mukbang" streamer, was 24; TikTokers Taylor LeJeune and Brittany Sauer passed at 33 and 28; and TV personality Jamie Lopez died at 37. They all promoted body positivity while severely obese, but the consequences caught up with them early. One more thought about bodies: if you’re a chubby girl with breasts, that’s no more a badge of honor than a skinny guy showing off his abs.
